Luvachicken Posted August 20, 2012 Share Posted August 20, 2012 (edited) Heidi has diaorrhea quite bad and the vet put her on some Baytril and some liquid biosalts. She suggested mixing up the chick food with water and she has eaten some of that and a few pellets that are in another pot. Is there anything else she can have to help put some weight back on her and make her feel a bit better ? She is almost 17 weeks old. Also what else can I use to wash her bottom with - I'm begining to run out of soft cotton wool pads ? I had a hen on Tylan Soluble a couple of weeks back and was advised that I could soak some bread in the diluted solution, and the girls went totally mad for it or soaked mealworms....a very quick way to get antib's into them. If she has diarrhoea don't give greens as this will only make the problem worse...too much water in diet equals watery plops How often are you having to wash her?? The bio stuff I have given her every hour with a syringe - it takes quite a long time to get it down for me - and then afterwards I wash her botty and cover it in the vaseline. mimi5 Posted August 20, 2012 Share Posted August 20, 2012 Sorry to hear about your little one. Maybe you could try nutri-drops to try and encourage her appitite? I have used it before on my poorly pekins and it does seem to really help when they are under the weather & off their food. It is made by net-tex and like your baytril antibiotic adminstered by syringe. My little (not so little ) chicks (now 14 & 12 weeks) love a little apple. Also once she finishes the baytril you could give her a little live yogurt to help her gut recover, maybe make a mash and mix it in? Best wishes for a speedy recovery. I think the bio stuff is sort of like a gut sorter outer and I have managed to give her almost a sachet of that. I have another one for tomorrow to give as well as more antibiotics. You lost Penny recently didn't you? When mine had to have baytril last year they were about the same age (query myco but no diagnosis........I dream of a chicken vet!!!! ) They did pick up once the baytril got to work and the only good tip the vet had was natural yogurt after completing the course of treatment (I think they can develop sour crop) Aprivo to add to their water is also good if they are a "bit loose", but again it just encourages good gut flora.......another thing in my cupboard collection!!!!! It says on the bottle how much to give so I weighed Heidi and she ways just over 500g so I gave her 1/2 a ml. The box doesn't say how often it is meant to be given though, please can someone tell me ? Also she still hasn't eaten much. I cooked her some potato and mashed it with peas and sweetcorn, some grated apple - which she ate a tiny bit and some weetabix. RyanR Posted August 21, 2012 Share Posted August 21, 2012 Unlikely, but you can put a drop of your nutridrops in them, also beat a drop or two of Cod liver oil into your scrambled eggs. Pasta is another good food to build them up. I am never without Avipro Plus, a vet I know who is himself a chicken keeper, always supplies it when he prescribes Baytril Your local vet may have it worth a phone call. She went to bed nicely and chatted some of the time too. I was looking forward to giving her a nice bath this morning to make her feel even better and fluff up her feathers.
