mrsatroy
That's great1 Thanks so much. If I can drag myself away from the in coop entertainment I will upload some pics! I jsut ordered netting from the Omlet site to cordon off an area for the girls when I let them FR. Our garden isn't exactly secure and the neighbours garden is a simple step over the kerb job so all round I think I would be happier if they have some level of containment. And neighbours have to yappy little Jack Russell dogs who I am sure would scare the living daylights out of the girls! Do people recommend clipping wings as they say this netting is for containging bantams - and my healthy crew are no bantams!
wannabe smallholder
My breeder helped me clip a wing on each of my girls, all large fowl. Doris my warren hybrid flapped up into a low branch then from branch to branch to get higher, the little minx, and florence tried to fly up and out of the wir (fully roofed the daft thing) but she was stood on top of the coop at the time. None of them have attempted to fly over the netting ( yet!!! ), which is lovely and high, though does begin to droop a little as stretches slightly (just re-adjust to tighten). I order the 12m kit but have positioned it from the wir around part of the lawn and up to a fence, not in a square so needed to reserve a pole to attach the gate to. They do poke their heads through the holes at the bottom to reach more grass and bugs and its funny to watch them pull their heads back in again! I would love to let them have freedom of whole garden but this way I feel more confindent, I can change run position to rest the lawn and keep poo in one area away from my kids. Good luck! Purplemaniacs
mrsatroy - looking forward to seeing your girls. Do these notes help at all? 1. load up your picture to photobucket, 2. then double click on it so you get just that one picture, 3. hover your mouse near the top of your picture and a button saying 'resize' comes up. 4. Select 320 x 240 and 5. click the confirmation button when the 'are you sure' message appears. 6. Then click on the IMG code box on the right which will copy the code that you can then paste (ctrl V) into your Omlet post. There is more information about adding photos to your post here http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=89816 I had never done it but following this I managed to put some photos on the forum. mrsatroy
Had first try at FR this evening. Was very nervous but all went well. They excavated the wood chips around the run for about an hour, never ventured too far. And then as the sunset 2 headed back into the run and I gently shepherded the other 2 in. Was relieved when they were safely tucked up! They are still very cautious of us but I'm sure that'll improve in time.
zakjon-98
Glad it went well They will soon become braver especially if you hand feeding them mealworms - they go crazy! If you are worried about them escaping when free ranging you should consider clipping their wings
dancing cloud
Gorgeous girlies ! Maggots have worked wonders with helping me make friends with my two new babies (and they're much cheaper than mealworms!)
