Luvachicken
I went to Rokers today to get the growers pellets but they didn't have any. The man said they had big problems getting hold of them and they wouldn't be having any more. They had all the other food though. I had to get a small packet of Fancy Feed, I think it was called, which the guy recommended I mix with layers pellets, and wean them off the growers. Bearing in mind though, that they told me the chicks I got from them were 12 weeks, and on here people told me they were younger, I'm not sure how much they actually know about chicks and chickens. It was recommended on here to feed them all growers pellets, as I still have big chicks anyway, and start layers pellets in Spring. Now I can't get the garvo growers what shall I do ? Get them a different make of growers or stick them all back on layers pellets ? Thanks x
good_egg
Is there a Dobbies garden centre near you? I got layers mash and pellets from there. Now ordering layers pellets and alfamix from hens 4 pets who are really helpful. Good luck!
Luvachicken
Thanks good egg, there is a Dobbies in Shinfield in Reading, but I'm not sure it's the same Dobbies that sends leaflets or advertises. Don't think I've seen chicken food there.
Purplemaniacs
If they are only young they need to be on growers not layers, if I was you I would find another supplier of Garvo or use a different make of feed. If you have any Garvo left I would gradually swap them to the new make. Chrissie
Luvachicken
I think mixing is what I'll have to do as I only have a little growers left. I will mix that with the stuff I bought today and see what I can find elsewhere. I did tell the men there that they should be on growers pellets until they start laying or longer, and they looked at me like I didn't know what I was talking about. I knew what I'd read from my Omlet friends .......silly men.
mimi5
Mine are on fancy feed growers, which they love. If you ring them up they will send you samples of their feeds. I've just done that yesterday and funnily enough we were comparing the protein levels in their layers and growers and it's slightly higher in the layers!!! Other ingredients, vitamins ect must be different. I had been giving mine a mixture of layers and growers as I had put them all together and wanted to finish up the layers before their use by date!! Luvachicken
Mimi5, I take it they do sell big bags of fancy feed? They only had small bags at Rokers.
sjp
you can get 20kg sacks of Fancy feed growers or you can use Garvo mini stater pellets(702) from hatch untill they are od enough to go onto layers there's also 714 Fancy Young hens grower pellets and 723 Fancy cockerel grower pellets garvo don't do a general grower feed
Luvachicken
714 was what I was after.
good_egg
Look on the dobbies site for a store perhaps and then phone to check? The ones round me all have 714 and the mash (as well as a load of others). It's near the fish/pond stuff in one and the pets stuff in the other two. They have chickens too, miles from the food strangely! Always feel sorry for them so don't go and look! Alternately if you are stuck this is where I mentioned on line - https://www.hensforpets.co.uk/products/garvo/garvo-714-fancy-young-hen-growers-pellets
Redwing
Fancy Feed is a good feed, its worth getting if you can get the growers pellets in the big sack. Marriages, Spillers and Dodson and Horrell are also good feeds Garvo seem to be letting a lot of suppliers down sadly I'm moving over to Matador feed from Garvo as its every bit as good apparently and costs less. Not something I ever thought I'd do but Garvo is getting harder to find now
Luvachicken
Thanks Redwing, I knew you'd have a list of what was best. I can't believe the way the men looked at me like I was a total dimwit
Melbourne12
I quite agree that you should stick to growers untilk they're mature. Garvo has always been a problem in terms of supply. We use Allen & Page Smallholder feeds, which are very good quality. Their chick crumbs, growers, layers, and breeders pellets are on our shopping list depending on the time of year and state of maturity of the birds. There seem to be plenty of stockists near to Fleet http://www.smallholderfeed.co.uk/Find-a-Stockist.aspx if you do a county or postcode search. Luvachicken
Thank you Melbourne12 for the link. I think the problem is almost sorted for me. Someone is going chicken shopping for me in Kent. So thank you to everyone for helping to get me sorted.
