Mixing vaccinated birds with non vaccinated?

Recommended Posts

I have been offered some hens by a friend who is moving, they are only young, about 21 weeks. She thinks they have been vaccinated against Mareks, but is not 100% certain.

My hens have not been vaccinated against anything.

I am sure I have read somewhere that it's a live vaccine and therefore there can be problems mixing vaccinated hens with non, in that the non vaccinated can pick up the disease from the vaccinated hens.

Is this correct, very likely, rare, or a load of rubbish?

Thank you

I've mixed them in the past with no problems but do know a few breeders that have bought new blood in from the continent (where vaccination is fairly standard) and that has wiped out many of their birds. A famous flock of barred Wyandottes was lost because of one cockerel bought in from Germany that was Mareks vaccinated

Like I said though I and many others have mixed them with no problems but I have to say I would think twice about having a vaccinated bird here now unless I absolutely had to

Well after worrying about the possibility of mixing vaccinated birds which I am only thinking of getting one of my new cream legbars is showing definite signs of Mareks :( luckily they are still seperate from the other girls. I am guessing the best thing is to dispatch her and keep an eye on the other newbies.
