kinsk
I have been offered some hens by a friend who is moving, they are only young, about 21 weeks. She thinks they have been vaccinated against Mareks, but is not 100% certain. My hens have not been vaccinated against anything. I am sure I have read somewhere that it's a live vaccine and therefore there can be problems mixing vaccinated hens with non, in that the non vaccinated can pick up the disease from the vaccinated hens. Is this correct, very likely, rare, or a load of rubbish? Thank you
Egluntyne
I have a mixed flock of pure breeds (un vaccinated) and hybrids, and so far, so good.
chestnutmare
I think it's a myth that vaccination and not vaccinated can't be mixed. Do non vaccinated people mix with vaccinated people? Yes. I have vaccinated and non vaccinated in the same garden. No problems.
Purplemaniacs
I have vaccinated and non vaccinated in the same garden. No problems. Me too. Chrissie
Chortle Chook
I heard the same thing and I *think* the idea is that the vaccinated ones can carry the virus so putting the non-vaccinated at risk however I too have vaccinated (2 silkies) and non vaccinated (the rest of my flock including a silkie cockerel who is now 6 years old) together and so far so good
Redwing
I've mixed them in the past with no problems but do know a few breeders that have bought new blood in from the continent (where vaccination is fairly standard) and that has wiped out many of their birds. A famous flock of barred Wyandottes was lost because of one cockerel bought in from Germany that was Mareks vaccinated Like I said though I and many others have mixed them with no problems but I have to say I would think twice about having a vaccinated bird here now unless I absolutely had to
kinsk
Thanks for your replies, so it is possible but not definite.
Plum
I have because I didn't know any better and I can't say they have had any illness I could contribute to being infected by a live vaccine.
Purplemaniacs
Plum I have too, due to ignorance. I have vaccinated hybrids and my only surving ex batt in the WIR with the and the . But I have the bantam chicks in seperate eglus and runs, so they are not in together but in close proximity to each other. Hopefully they will be ok. The Dogmother
None of mine are vaccinated and I know that the standard advice is not to mix the two, but it's up to you.... I wouldn't though.
kinsk
Well after worrying about the possibility of mixing vaccinated birds which I am only thinking of getting one of my new cream legbars is showing definite signs of Mareks luckily they are still seperate from the other girls. I am guessing the best thing is to dispatch her and keep an eye on the other newbies.
The Dogmother
I would, chances are that it's a one-off brought on by the stress of a new home, but best to keep an eye on the others.
