Gertie
My cat has hurt her paw. There was quite a bit of blood on the kitchen floor earlier. It's not bleeding now though. She was asleep on the bed, but she got up & I can see that's she is limping. Although she's been climbing trees & jumping off a 6 foot wall. I've had a look & she has quite a deep cut on one of the small pads on the front paw. I have got purple spray, but I guess she will try to lick that off. Should I try to bathe it? Ive never had a cat cut a paw before. Is it a vet trip, do you think? Thanks
Lavenders_Blue
I think if it's stopped bleeding I'd be tempted to leave it. I suspect all a vet would be able to do is stitch it (not needed if it's not bleeding?) and administer antibiotics. If you can keep it clean with salt water, or the purple spray might be a better idea as cats are not always the most tolerant of patients, and keep an eye on it to make sure no infection sets in then I think you should be okay. Can you keep your cat in for a few days to minimise the risk of muck getting into the wound as it heals?
chicken bark
I second bathing it in salt water. I think their pads heal quickly. I'd bathe it a couple of times a day and keep an eye on it in case it gets swollen and hot.
Gertie
Thanks for the reassurance. I just had a go at bathing it in boiled salted water. More like a few dunks as she wasn't impressed. It looks deep & started bleeding again for a bit after the dunking & the licking she did, but stopped again now. I think I will probably take her to the vets as I don't know how deep or what the extent is as too much fur & movement. I will monitor until tomorrow. Thanks
Lavenders_Blue
Sounds like a good plan if it has started bleeding again. Cats can be so tricky - I remember when we used to have cats years ago and my poor mum would have to try and clean them up after they had got into various s"Ooops, word censored!"s and s"Ooops, word censored!"es. Claws, teeth and a lot of yowling were order of the day!
Gertie
Yes, they do make a real old fuss don't they! I do wish that they would listen when I tell them I'm trying to help them!!!
craftyhunnypie
Years ago, our old cat 'Holly' got bit by a magpie on her leg. We bought some self sticking horse bandage & some Vetsyme? green cream. It was fantastic stuff that cream was, it healed the wound beautifully. freddie
We've just had a similar scene in our house, deep cut. Went to vet, as wasn't sure . £30 later, we had a pack of antibiotics, and all was well in three days. TBH, I think we would have been fine with no anti b's, but I lost my nerve, as she's a woos cat!!
Gertie
Glad your puss is ok Freddie. Just got back from vets. Cut is very deep & she has pulled out the nail. Vet recommends stitching. So she is in overnight because I can't get her to the vet tomorrow morning because I have to leave so early. Very sad. I came over all funny in the vets & had to sit down with some water. Not sure what happened there! I pick her up tomorrow at 7pm. Thankfully I have her insured.
Olly
ouch! poor puss, good job you took her in. She'll be fine ... it's very stressful, especially when you have to leave them there, but she'll be in good hands.
Gertie
Thanks Olly. I know she'll bounce back. I miss her already & she's going to have to stay with my nan for a while. The vet said she will need to stay in but I cant keep her in here for the next week as we are just about to have replacement heating, so there will be noise, dirt & plumbers. I will remember to take the feliway. At least it will be calm, warm & quiet at my nans
