I've had a Dyson Animal upright ever since we moved here eight and a half years ago. Before that we had a Miele Cat and Dog cylinder, and before that a Henry. Our upright is still ok...ish but is losing some of it's oomph and I'm thinking about replacing it. I want another Dyson (sorry Miele and Henry lovers ) but my dilemma is cylinder or upright. We don't have stairs so upright not an issue for that but we do have mostly hard floors and so I'm just wondering if it would be better to opt for a cylinder (that said I well remember the way that cylinders fail to follow you around effortlessly and snag on every bit of furniture ( !)

I have a Dyson upright of about 7 years. It works hard with two labradors, OH, DD, DS and 2 grandchildren. It too has lost some of its umph but the filter is due a wash.

 

I was thinking of getting it serviced by Dyson as I have heard that this is a good value for money.

When you say its lost its omph have you given all the filters a good blast, my dad a plumber gas man etc and he still has his orginal DC01 that he uses after he has done any work (he has had to replace the od bit) but he swears by giving all the filters a really good blast with an air compressor so if you have one or know anyone with one it may be worth doing that first. Having said all that I am also considering getting myself a dyson in thinking of the cylinder one as I have mobilty issuse and I find them a bit lighter we have a russel hobbs cylinder one at the moment but its filters need cleaner every 2nd time you use it when it goes its brill but I do have the furniture sangging issue etc which does end up with lots of fowl language whilst im cleaning

Definitely recommend the Dyson upright. Ours is 12 years old and still works very efficiently. We live over three floors so we bought a cyclinder dyson as it was small and light. However it doesn't cope well with DD1s long hair and the dust container is way too small!!

Be very careful and ring Dyson yourself. I was rung by someone claiming to be Dyson asking if I wanted to get my Dyson serviced. They wrecked it, stole my decent filters and left fake gauze filters instead and turned out to be a different company that rings down the phone list because so many people have Dysons they have a good success rate

A vote for Dyson upright here. Have had mine for over 12 years and it is used on both carpets and wooden floors. Previously had a miele cylinder - never again!

I would recommend a Dyson service - providing its the official one as Patricia said. My Dyson Animal had lots of bits replaced and is just like new again, really worth the money I thought .

I think I will look at getting mine serviced this coming year with the hope of getting a few more years service out of it.

 

If I bought another one I think I would go for an upright one again.

I too have heard very good reports of dyson service from more than one source.

 

I have various dysons and will be investing in a service for my hand held one this year as it has lost it's oooomph and the battery cuts out.

Yes I fell for the fake service because Dyson had done such an excellent job before and it was about a year since the last service and the company that rang seemed to know that. I wonder if they really knew the last service date (maybe someone sold the list) or were just very good at bluffing until I gave away the info.

 

I had an upright and have replaced it with a cylinder. I like the cylinder but the only place it struggles is the kitchen with has vinyl flooring. On wood, tiles and carpet it is great. On vinyl flooring the upright would be better. I bought the cylinder as I thought it would be lighter to carry up and down the stairs.

 

I keep meaning to get Dyson booked to see if they can sort out the upright.

Thanks one and all for your replies. OH is very practical and has already replaced some of the bits on the Dyson...I think it may need a new brush thingy, and as it's quite ancient I am dithering about spending on more replacement bits for it only to blow up (or something!) in a while.

 

I will investigate costs properly

 

We had one of those fake Dyson servicing calls but fortunately my Daughter took the call, and in the cold light of day realised it was quite suspicious...I think I might have been drawn in!
