Karen & co.
I can remember wanting to be a trapeze artist so badly that my dad built my sisters and I a trapeze at the bottom of the garden!!! probably a cunning plan cos I went on to be a nurse then a midwife, back to nurse! mum and now all the children are at school, a Learning support assistant - not great pay 3 days a week, but great hours and school hols off Would really like to be self employed but doing what???!!! Guest
I wanted to be a nurse right up until I was 14, when I suddenly decided teaching was for me. After Music degree at university, I decided marriage and a family would be more rewarding than a singing career, so went to Teacher Training. Eventually got a job (music teachers don't move much!) and taught for just 2 years until starting a family. Since then I have taught recorders, singing and part-time music as well as playing piano occasionally in schools. Husband and I have also run church choirs for the whole of our married life (20 years), which is what I really love. I am now a wife, mother to 4, and Director of Music in a church with 60 musicians to look after. I particularly love the 20 children in our junior choir, so I am still teaching! I sing occasionally too. I should never moan because I love my life (mostly!)
Cate in NZ
Hi Karen we obviously had similar careers . The nurse, midwife, back to nurse bit I mean, not the trapeze artist . I'm one of those sad people who always wanted to be a nurse, and never really deviated from that plan. That said probably my best years were spent as a midwife- I loved that job, so special, and such a priviledge to share such amazing experiences with the women and their families. Sadly I had to leave because the shifts were impossible when I had my own children who needed me, and there was very little flexibility in the system. I'm no longer practising- too hard a struggle to maintain 2 registrations, but maybe I'll be able to go back to it one day. I'm still nursing though- in general practice, it has massive frustrations, but it's still a worthwhile job, and the hours fit better with my family life. Lesley, forensic science isn't all it's cracked up to be. That's hubby's field, and I think that he enjoys the challenge, but it's unsocial hours, demanding, tedious and can involve working in horrendous conditions. Serious crimes rarely seem to happen during 9-5, or in nice, clean, open areas
Lesley
I remember you saying now Kate - at the time of the London Bombings, I'd be no good down in the underground - but, i'm good at 'tedious'
Guest
I was really thin in those days too - with big curly hair! I remember having a pink work shirt with white collars and a pink tie and a yellow shirt with white collars and a yellow (or should I say "lemon" coloured) tie. Pink and lemon were the colours to wear in those days! I had white ties and those little thin leather ties too... 80s fashion eh?! PHWOOOOOAAR!!!!!!! Sounds like my first boyfriend! When I was little, I genuinely wanted to be a chicken keeper! And a figure skater, or a ballet dancer, or an actress and I toyed with the idea of being prime minister! I went out with a lad called Harvey (!?), who was into lemon, pink and grey - it was a bit of an 80's theme, wasn't it?
The Dogmother
You sounded like a real catch then Dan I remember that type of trousers and the slip-on shoes - golly, that shows my age - I was probably about 23 at the time!
Chunkin
I'm sure I had boots in the 80s! Weren't they called 'pixie boots'? Suede things and kind of crumpled if I remember rightly. Maybe they weren't very popular, I've never been very fashionable
Mrs Frugal
I had boots in the eighties. Long deep burgundy leather ones with high heels, two pairs of pixie boots and some low heeled black riding type ones !
Chunkin
OOhh, I have some long, deep burgundy boots now! Don't wear them very often - I live in my black ones (or my walking boots).
ali-s
I had a pair of burgundy pixie boots and a matching burgundy saddle bag. Favourite boots were a pair of black leather with killer 4 inch heels which took me up to 5ft 11 inches. Wore them with my black leather very short skirt and black leather jacket with Dynasty style shoulder pads. This was my favourite outfit for hitting the bright lights of Nottingham on a Friday night back in the early 80's
The Dogmother
Wa hey, we've got onto boots - my faves! Got a few pairs (well more than a few then ); must say that they are a hit with The Boy and the lads at work, go nicely with the now re-fashionable textured tights. I have a short purple velvet skirt, with chocolate brown suede boots (thin, low heel and pointy toes) and chocolate brown textured tights. Don't care whether anyone else likes them - I feel like the dog's kahunas in them, so that's good enough for me! I was a punk (never really came back into fashion) Flat top hair with orange streaks, Souxsie Sue make up, fluorescent mohair sweater, micro leather skirt, ripped fishnets and PIXIE BOOTS! Also had a pair of thigh high black leather boots, but couldn't walk in them! Oh, and leather jacket with the sleeves cut off and fringes on the back - it was very tatty and about 10th hand! At a guess - you might find that it has actually opened it in one of your existing explorer windows, and they may be minimised. If explorer isn't already open and you click on a link in an e-mail, then it will create it in a new window so you will see it.
The Dogmother
Thanks for that grd, but the only browser window I have open at the time is the one with my hotmail account in it. Usually the link will open in a new window as you said, but the link just doesn't work at all. It's very frustrating when I am trying to whizz through the postings Any bright ideas? The Dogmother
Ta for that Hon, will have a try when I get a moment. The problem is that it is intermittent - a bit like problems with cars - so it works sometimes and not others, which is why I haven't been able to work it out. buffie
I wanted to be a doctor. I would operate on tiny tears and my teddies. Cocktail sticks were great syringes, drew on stitches, I think I have dolls in loft so will post my odd surgical attempts if I find. Also shaved little ted for post op...I am weird!!! Suppose I help heal peoples minds, without surgery now!! Also wanted to be an actress, nick name of Betty Davis as a child. Queen of over acting darlings!! Popcorn
Hairdresser for me. The amount of other people's hair I either burnt on the curling tonges, or got tangled round a brush put me off. I was quite good a the punk look though and regulary used to practise on my Mum by back combing all her hair. I cut OH's hair now. He doesn't know this, but it's with the kitchen scissors too! I think I do a good job (and he can never see the back anyway!) Did you notice how Buffie and I went back on topic then
