Walking dogs in hot weather

Recommended Posts

Just a reminder about taking care whilst walking your dogs in this lovely weather we're having...

Firstly there are adders about already! Make plenty of noise and move carefully if you're walking on grassland and moors; I disturbed a sunbathing adder the other afternoon (luckily the dogs weren't nearby to get bitten) and a friend's dog has been bitten, needing vet treatment.

In the hotter weather try to walk your dog at the beginning and end of the day when it is cooler, walk in shady areas, woodland is good, near cool running water for them to cool down in.

I know it's not easy but try to stop them dashing around in the heat if possible.

Make sure that they have plenty of body temperature water to drink, if they are hot and won't drink then pour it over their head, paws and tummy.

If your dog has overheated then cover it in slightly cool (NOT cold) wet towels, and keep a close eye. Take it to the vet instantly if it doesn't recover quickly or you are at all concerned.

Us speed hound owners are being careful now as they can get too hot pretty quickly with all that racing around.

Good advice, DM. It seems to have got warm all of a sudden and I've had to start walking in places with water to drink, or taking some with me, as Tango has been getting quite hot.

I've had to restrict the amount of ball games she's allowed to play, as running after the ball makes her hot very quickly and she'd keep going until she drops if I let her. She's a bit grumpy about it but c'est la vie!
