My new ex batts have a sore bum

Recommended Posts

Please help, I am desperate, one of my ex batts who I got Sunday has a sore bottom, she came to me like that and I have been keeping an eye on her, the others have the odd sneaky peck and I am putting them to Bed and I am worried they may peck her in the night. Shall I wash her bum? Shall I spray her with stop peck? I am worried it might sting as she is sore, don't think it's bleeding but very red,

Any help would be really appreciated.

Sleepless night again I think

I don't think you need to worry too much about tonight - I'd be very surprised if they peck her in the dark. Chickens are normally very good about being quiet after lights out, (unlike my three year old who was just yelling 'mummy come back' down the stairs - at nearly 10 o'clock!!! :shameonu: ).

Perhaps you could post a close up photo of her bum in the morning? People would be better able to advise you about how to deal with it.

Try not to worry too much - what ever happens in these first few settling in days, she will still be a hell of a lot better off than she would be if you hadn't adopted her :D

ah thank you, will try to get a photo and upload it, she looked a lot less red this morning and she laid her first egg since we had her yesterday so not sure if that had anything to do with it. ( all five laid yesterday and in the nest box) and i think the pecking is opportunistic rather than aggresive, as she walk's past one may give her a peck but she scurry's off and doesnt seem to be too bothered about it. she was the second out the coop this morning and is eating and drinking.

does anyone think it will be a good idea to wash her, i am worried about stressing her out:(((

I found THE best thing to use was a nappy rash cream, called Metanium,. (be sure to get one for rash not cradle cap (don't know if that works or not :D )

It needs to be spread very thinly only a cleaned bum ...

It coats and soothes and takes the redness straight out and lasts for several days...

You can almost see them going ahhhhhh hats better..

If they are very sore around the preen gland a cotton bud can be used to carefuly paint some.. but remember they need their gland to oil themselves so only a little if it is very sore and only near it..

Best thing out in my opinion...

good luck

Is it sore - or just red? I read somewhere that red skin is normal in chickens when there are no feathers. I seem to remember it happened to the last 3 ex-bats I had who were almost featherless all over ( in December!). Where they had no feathers was red because of exposure to the light and air. Once they feathered up the skin returned to a much paler colour. I think the danger is that the others will peck her if you put something tasty on her. If she's eating and drinking I'd leave her.
