Anyone use Adobe Photoshop?

Recommended Posts

Biggest daughter tells me that she "needs" Photoshop for the computers, as she is studying GSCE triple ICT from September & they have been advised to have it.

Any ideas where its cheapest to buy, & which version would be best?

I need it to run on the desktop which has XP & her laptop which has Vista.

I have no clue on this one....although looking at the spec it looks like a useful addition to the computer anyhow :D

illegal ways aside (that should not be posted here!) it is worth asking if the ICT dept has student versions under license..

my son uses a particular CAD program for his GCSE ICT - the school ICT dept had a license to issue program to students...

I used photoshop a lot on my course, Cinnamon, and would love to know of a cheap source if you find one. I found it invaluable for somethings. I use it with a graphics tablet, which I love too. Other freeby programmes are fine for a bit of touching up on photos, but photoshop does a whole load more.

I love using it, but only use a small fraction of it's capabilities. Phil uses it alongside 3D design packages for his illustration work.

The problems I had were down to the way those total incompetents in town reloaded my PC, not the package. I have a link to the solution and will ask my techie friend to sort it next time he's round.

Photoshop is wonderful. (It is by Adobe, by the way -- the same people that do Acrobat -- not Abode: you need to get it right if you are searching online.)

The price is horrendous on the Adobe UK site: £569.88: you could get a Cube and most of the extension for that. Your daughter should be able to get educational discount to bring the price down.

There is a cut down version called Photoshop elements - There's a new version 5 out for windows and version 4 for Mac. £62.00 ish from Amazon.

I've used the older version and there isnt much difference between the main photoshop and elements however the full Photoshop is like industry standard.

Jaime - I just came on to say the same thing.

I teach Photoshop to Fashion and Textile students Sarah, and there's no way my students can afford the full version. Photoshop elements is great for what they need and I'm sure it will suit your daughter's needs perfectly for what she needs for school.

Allows qualified education end users from the United Kingdom to purchase Education products and Student products at a reduced price.

Qualified end-users include full or part time students enrolled at accredited Higher Education Establishments, full or part time faculty and staff employed at accredited Education Establishments and students enrolled at an accredited primary or secondary school providing full-time instruction.

Qualified education end users from the United Kingdom only may purchase academic products in this store.

What are the restrictions in using education versions of the products?

A qualified end user may only purchase one copy of any product.

Former Macromedia Educational products (Studio 8, Dreamweaver, Flash etc) are intended for instructional and administrative purposes only and may not be used for any commercial purpose.

The Student Edition products are for home use by students only - the products cannot be installed and used on institutional or commercial computers.

I also run linux, there is a very similar package called 'Gimp' (although a dodgy name) that is available for nowt legally as are versions of all office type software as it is open source.

Probably not much use for her co"Ooops, word censored!" as it will be Photoshop specific I would imagine.

Handy if you want to mess about with it though. There is also a 3D modelling package called Blender that seems quite good if a little impossible to work!

For my next machine I intend to bin Windows completely and switch to the Ubuntu Linux distribution which I have been trying for the last six months or so, I have been very impressed with it, no worries of viruses or pirated software or having to pay through the nose for software that should be part of the operating system as standard. It boots much quicker with Linux and runs quicker too.

You can even try it without installing as the full operating system will run from the CD! I found this very useful when my hard disc drive died. I inserted the CD went on the internet and ordered a new on online from the same 'dead' machine! quite remarkable :D You won't see a windows OS that will run in full from a CD!

It is a bit daunting if you have any technical probs if you are used to dealing with Windows, it's another language quite literally, especially if don't know DOS. Most of the help available on the forums involves typing reams of tech"Ooops, word censored!"abble into a command window.

Not much cop for gaming either as most games are Windows based.

Other than that I love it especially the no virus worries thing.

So here's to 'Goodbye Bill Gates'

Kev.

Thanks everyone, I knew I would get some good advice on here.

We are probably going for the Elements package, & as The Hubby points out we can buy it via the Business as we will also be using it for brochures etc.

Glad to hear its as good as everyone says too :D

Thanks Clare :D

I think I will have to check with the school as to which version I should get - & I can't do that now as its the Summer hols

Typically they only told the children they would need it on the last day of term.....

I will keep that link - looks like a really interesting site.

what course is she doing Cinnamon?

I teach ICT at GCSE level and we never tell the students that they "need" software.

it could be OCR Nationals or DiDA - any ideas?

Its DIDA - she is doing the basic 2 GCSE course, plus an extended extra for a possible extra 2 GSCEs

Its a computing specialist school, so she is doing 2 of her GSCEs next year,in year 10.

To be fair they wern't "told" as such, more it was recommended (& they were told that they can use the schools facilites if they couldn't get it)

But I need to get a decent photo editing programme anyhow, & Devon says she would like it as her reward for doing so well on her SATS :P

They should have licenses at the school, but it might not be the newest version (it doesn't matter) but it's totally legal as you can put them on a certain amount of computers.

But yeah, just go for the main adobe photoshop website x
