stacey30
Sadly had of our ex-batts put to sleep today due to Peritonitis. She was only with us 4 weeks, she came in an awful state cuts, worms, bald patches and no tail feathers. Her feathers were starting to come through and my daughter loved seeing how the new feathers were growing back all prickly. Her temp was 107 which the vet said was too high and there was a mass in her stomach, he was very good actually as I called ahead and agreed that if she was in a bad way not to put her to sleep in front of my daughter but to say he'll care for now as she'll need a lot of attention, we still had tears though In reflection now is this more common in ex batts and older chickens? Haven't experienced it before but would know the signs now especially the way she stood straining. Someone else told me a friend of hers had peritonitis and has her on antibiotics for life, i guess it's how severe it is Rip Prickles xx
Ain't Nobody Here
What a shame . Sounds like she was on her way out before she even came to you, poor thing .

paulad
One of ours had peritonitus, she was older, we think, we had also only had her a few weeks but she wasnt a battery chuck. Awful to go through, sending my love x
Purplemaniacs
Sorry to hear about Pickles. At least she had a short time of fresh air, love and attention. I think it is a bit of a gamble with ex batts some enjoy a long time of freedom but sadly some don't. Of the three I rescued one lived only a short time, one a medium time and Agnes is still with us and looks better than my hybrid girls. redsunset
So sorry to read this. I think it an amazing thing to do when some one rescues ex-batts. She had a good 4 weeks of what chicken life should be, and which a lot never do so bless you for doing that.
