How Much??!! Worming question

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I have chickens who seem to have worms in their poop! Disgusting I know :vom: Well I went to the local pet shop to get some kind of remedy and the only one available it seems is verm x. It was £16 for a small bottle!! I was thinking that this was something that has been a problem long before this product was around so there must be a long tested remedy out there. Any ideas welcome!!

Hello, I know the best one is flubenvet and it is only available I think from the vets? Sorry I can't remember how much it cost but I would guess around what you paid already? It really is the best stuff from what I read for treating all worms. I know chicken keeping can be a tad expensive at times but a tub of this lasts a long time. can't think of any 'natural remedys' sorry.

or SPR Centre [urlhttp://www.sprcentre.com/][/url] do it pre mixed for you in 10kg or 20kg. They allow 1kg of feed per bird ie the 10kg will worm 10 birds. They were spot on as I have 9 chickens and the 10kg gave me 1 day extra feed. Because it is a licensed product, they will phone you after your purchase to run through your useage of it. Very good service too. :D

I brought my flubenvet from amazon. Vern X is a herbal gut conditioner and really shouldn't be relied upon as a wormer. If you have seen worms in the poo I would suggest you worm now and then again in a month or so and don't forget no treats during worming week:((

I would also use a ground sanitiser to stop the cycle

Hi. I have 2 chickens for last 3 months. I have given them a dose of Verm X last month but saw a worm in Mabel's poo earlier (Yuck) - have ordered flubovent tonight. My chickens will only eat layers mash so will put it in that. I was picking up the poo and it was loose which is how I saw the worm. :vom:

Will order some Nettex ground sanatiser tonight. I was planning to change the old wood chips at the weekend as they are all compacted now and a bit smelly so maybe that will help.

Should I also be using Diatom powder or diatomaceous earth powder? Are these 2 the same thing? At the moment I just dust the eglu with red mite powder. Does this go just in the eglu or in the run too? If so, which should I buy?

Also, the chickens are due a dusting with red mite powder. I'm not sure how much to put on them or if you need to 'rub it in'. I did them 6 weeks ago but was just a feeble dusting while they ran away. They are both easier to handle now. Someone told me to put them in a pillowcase with the powder and shake them but I don't think I could do that!

Thanks.

Thanks for reply. I have ordered the Nettex already and will get some Diatom shortly to dust the nestbox and eglu with. Now the weather is muddy they don't seem to go in the dust bath (which is a hole they dug in the flower bed under a tree). There isn't room to put one in the run as its a standard classic.

I will have a look at the spot on for chickens - it does sound a lot easier. Maybe they have it online - I get the cats spot on from there.
