1st BHWT rehoming day. Wish me luck

Recommended Posts

I am volunteering on my first BHWT rehoming day on Sunday, I am really looking forward to it but I know I will be overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of poor girls needing homes. OH had threatened to leave me if I bring any home! Wish me luck....I know a tear or two will be forthcoming!

Good luck - you will be fine, we are in a routine with ours now and can slot in a newbie and give them support

Usually the rescue group will separate any poorlies out as they become apparent and those will go home with an experienced volunteer and as the others are rehomed the number of any spares will become clear and usually you get some people that will take them along with their booked hens

In saying that I came home with five at the end of the last rescue

There are usually plenty of cakes which is a plus

OH, let you slip and slide in mud recently? Does he really imagine there won't be a wee girl and her bessie who make eyes at you saying........are you our new mom?....... Will make sure to reading on Sunday night. You are made of sterner stuff than me if you succeed. I'd be rubbish and fill a crate!.......

Haha redsunset, OH went out and bought me some studded croc like slip on's for fear of death if I fell over again! Not exactly manolo blahnik but what are you gonna do

I have enlisted his help on the re homing day to do traffic control, he wasn't keen but once I told him he could direct traffic and hold a walkie talkie......well that was all I needed to say.

To be fair I am looking to rehome some more ex commercial girls in the summer after I have saved enough to get a wee little classic but I was told yesterday that for the first time BHWT are struggling for homes so if they get desperate I will take on a few girls before.....but not Sunday, :liar:

.

Throw in a one of those luminous jackets like the ones they make for hens and he'll be well away.

Top tip - watch out that you don't bring red mite home. Wear old clothes that you don't mind throwing out.

We go to a site, it's actually a animal rescue centre ( but I think that's incidental) in Biggin hill kent, then the girls get brought from the farm to the centre in crates, we health check them, feed/water then sort them for re homing. Then clean up after they have all gone to their new luxury pads (green eglu)

It's where I picked my girls up from so it's kind of payback

I am gonna get dirty cold and emotional and I can't wait

Ha! And there was me thinking you had posh crocs with crampons installed! Still a girls got to do what a girls got to do! Waiting with bated breath for Sunday night......to see if a couple of wee almost featherless chooks eyes look at you with hopelessness and a "Ooops, word censored!"ody wants us expression.....

Ok that was heart rending(and a bit naughty!)but good on you for doing it! I'd be re-mortgaging the house and buying a field and she'd! I am far to soft.......

Haha that was cruel redsunset, emotional blackmail to the max!! I am in a terraced house in London, probably the polar opposite of your lovely place so I have to be mindful of my neighbours otherwise I would bring them all home.

And as for the crocs, they are ugly rascal's and just about the only item of wardrobe I own that is practical!!! You can take the girl out of London but.......

Same as you can take the girl out of the croft.....lol. I am doing my best to lower the tone of my neighbourhood and keep it countryside despite the large houses and only two miles out of our wee town!

Crocs are soo comfy I am told but no way. I am not a skinny Minnie and refuse to look like Noddy walking down the street

Good luck on Sunday and hope you get loads of lovely ppl looking to re home those poor girls. Have not bought chicken in the supermarket for eight months now, do miss it but just can't do it!

Make sure you gently bully everyone to take two more than they intended! :)

So I am home after my first rehoming for BHWT, what a day!

Got to the rescue centre got two stables ready for the arrival, the 486 ex caged hens arrives in crates, we off loaded them into the stables and did a quick health check, I was unprepared for the poor condition of them, there were lots of very bald sore looking girls who had the saddest, pale faces and pale combs. Your head tells you they will change soon but your heart bleeds for them.

All the re-homers duly arrives to take the girls to their new homes, lucky girls and each were carefuly packed in their boxes for the onward journey.

Once everyone had taken there girls and we had cleaned up, that was it job done! I am so happy I did it and have put my name down for future dates, OH really stepped up to the plate and totally took control of the traffic, made me very proud:)

If any of you or future omleteers took some of today's girls then a massive thank you, those girls really do deserve the TLC I am sure they are going to get...I just had a lovely hot shower, got my PJ's on and am having a nice hot cup of tea.....I am knackered, I have ruined my lovely dune boots and I have a back ache... life doesn't get better

 well done. Give yourself a big pat on the back, if you've got the energy

My girls were very poor when I got them, though not skinny. They had sore bottoms and chests, pale combs and a shortage of feathers. That was nearly 3months ago, they look much better now. They are really fluffy, not at all sore, and desperate to get out if their coop every morning. So glad I took them on. Such a good job all you volunteers do. :D
