Alis girls
Edwina my Sussex died this morning. She'd been a bit off but was eating. Her comb had changed from pink to red and she'd just finished a moult. I suspect an egg had got stuck as her bum was a bit mucky. I took my eye off the ball as I'd been ill and I think I could've intervined sooner. Lost 5 hens in 4 years. I've got 2 left now - I do feel deflated - I'd always wanted a Sussex and they are so pretty. I dont quite know where to go. We planned a WIR but the weathers too bad for digging and if I'm honest I feel too run down for major works. Sorry to sound so down beat. gavclojak
Your entitled to sound flat after losing your Edwina. Don't beat yourself up, all my girls have mucky bottoms. I took one of mine to the vets the other day as I was convinced she was 'down'...there was nothing wrong with her. As I am sure you know they hide these things really well, so the very fact your upset means you were a good mum to her. Chin up x
Cheeky Chooky
Sorry you lost your girl Ali and sorry to hear you've been poorly too *hug* Once you feel better and the weather improves, you can start making plans for your WIR and hopefully new to live with your remaining two
Luvachicken
I'm sorry you lost your girly and that you have been poorly too - I hope you start feeling better soon. Sometimes these things happen, and even if you were feeling 100% well, she still might not have made it.
Alis girls
Thanks girls - feeling a bit sorry for myself I'm afraid. OH kept saying "youve got to carry on - you always say how fragile chucks are, we'll get 2 more as then we'll be back to 4 a good number" Bless hes always quoting bits of Omlet at me I know i should jump at the chance of 2 more but its a palaver having to separate in an Omlet run (although we have a self built bit on the end.) I might stick at 2 till I can get stuck in to digging out an area earmarked for the run. I am pleased hes so keen - this from a man who didnt want hens but warmed to them when they arrived. Valkyrie
Lots of hugs to you, sorry to hear about your Sussex - and I hope you feel much better soon. Not much fun being ill and having the rubbish weather either. And the chooks don't seem to be happy with the dull weather either.
Alis girls
Thanks - feeling much less low and have a bit more energy (had a busy weekend). My OH pointed out I had only lost 4 hens (not 5) I suspect my brain is going to mush after shingles. My remaining 2 produced 2 lovely eggs today and got corn for their reward. I hope the weather improves for everyone esp those in the floods so we can look forward to spring. Love Ali xxxx
