URGENT HELP! chicken attacked by a cat

Recommended Posts

Many hugs to you and your little girl. Like you we only got two to start with; 'fortunately' (no=t right word i know) both got peritonitis around the same time and were both PTS together. So then we got 3. We've since lost one of those to a crop infection but at least the other two have been OK. When we get down to just one we'll buy another two and hope to keep to that pattern then so we always have at least a pair. You'll always remember your lost chook but the new ones will have their own completely different personalities and soon be just asl oved. As someone mentioned earlier losing a pet is a good way of getting children to understand death and grief and there are some great children's books available such as Badger's Parting Gifts and one i still can't read without crying called Goodbye Mog about a cat.

I'm so sorry to hear about your girl, that's very sad :(

My kids were devastated too when we lost one of our girls but as everyone has said, it's a valuable lesson. We hung a wind spinner in the garden as a memorial, just so they can remember her. They also came with me to chose new chickens.

I hope you and your little girl are ok x

After two traumatic days our remaining chicken, Mrs chicken gave us a lovely suprise today...first ever egg!!!! So happy cheered us all right up. Couldn't have happened at a better time. So happy it has all been worth it.

Kept her in eglu and run after cat attack but can see the cat has been back muddy paw marks all over eglu and snapped to of the bungies that holsd the cover down.

Any suggestions to scare cat off or keep it away. Mum and dad have an electronic thing that makes high pitched noise works for stopping cats but worried it might upset chickens too.

All suggestions welcome.

Thanks you !eggwhite!:D

Sorry to hear about this; I've had some dog trouble since getting the Henz; pretty much the reason why I don't let them free range. I don't feel free ranging is a good idea for us as I'm aware of the odds - there's going to be losses due to predation and that's just a fact of life. My girls stay in their run for the entire day, but they have plenty of room in there and I've buried the skirting under rocks to keep anything from being able to dig under it. I only let me girls out when someone is supervising and I've got the omlet netting up as well to keep them in a given place even when ranging. They get locked up securely into the Haus at night because again, I know the odds, and I know the one time I forget to do this is when disaster will strike.

You could do a few things like keep orange peel in the run to deter cats (they are intolerant to vitamin C and the smell of citrus puts them off). Best bet of all would be supervised free ranging - I let the girls out at night, so they get about a half hour out and about before they are put to bed. This way I can scare off whatever comes into the garden and keep them safe.

How lovely to find a first egg. My granddaughters love looking for eggs, did you daughter find it?

I would get two new hens to add to your existing one. That way you have three just in case you were to lose another.

When we started we had two from Omlet and immediately got two more from a local breeder, otherwise we would have had three from Omlet.

Hope you get another egg today.

Chrissie

Yes Chrissie my daughter found it so she was thrilled.

We are going to get another 2 chickens not sure whether to get same breed or different "normal" size chickens.

I have had me little boy wee in the garden near eglu to try to deter the cat.

Orange peel sounds good too. Will def have to keep chickens in the run and only supervise free ranging for now.

Sorry to read about your chicken.

Yes maybe bigger would be better.

Our cat was very interest and excited when first saw our 2 chickens, but they are big buff Orpington's and when he ran at them they flapped and terrified him. They create a strong breeze!

They wasn't really fussed by the cat. Now he gives them a wide berth and they sometimes chase him out his own garden!

Still best not to trust animal instincts and supervise free ranging.

So sorry to hear your girl didn't pull through :(

Is Mrs Chicken a pekin too? If you will have them locked in a run most of the day/time you may want 2 more bantams. Thinking of space and possible bullying. How long is your run?

Mrs chicken is pekin too. Trying to get 2 more from same breeder.

Have been free ranging since aug with no probs so bit worried how she will cope in the run all day.

But also thinking bigger hens might scare the cat. Got the cat scared noise thing from my mum today hoping it will keep cat away.

Thanks for all your kind messages

Just read your thread and wanted to say how sorry I am to hear about your chicken.

We have 2 cats but they are scared of the chickens. I would have never even thought about a cat attacking chickens. There are loads of cats around where I live, I will now keep more of an eye on my chucks when they are free ranging.

Well done on getting your first egg after all that your girly may have seen in the last few days.

The reason I got my girls a wooden run to attach to the omlet run was because of the local cats.

They would sit on our shed roof looking down at them licking their lips.

I decided that because my pekins aren't really much bigger than a wood pigeon they would be a nice little snack for the pesky cats round here.

WD40 is a good cat deterrent sprayed on used tea bags or bits of cloth.

At the moment I have one local cat trying to catch the fish out of my pond and seriously thinking of getting some water balloons to throw at it.
