patsylabrador
Was yesterday. To celebrate rather than a movie and a pizza we decided to do a one-nighter in Devon. Took a gamble, did no research and plumped for a hotel in Lynton. It was the most perfect day. I've dreamt of staying in an old hotel in a small harbour town with a nice inn for good nosh and good beer. It had all of those. The room was gorgeous and had a view across the water to Wales. I waved to Welshpurpletree, I hope she saw. It has a Victorian water-powered funicular between Lynton(which was where we stayed) and Lynmouth(where the pub was) We walked up the freakishly steep hill back to the hotel. The pub landlord offered to get us a cab because I think he thought softy Londoners wouldn't handle it. It was ok, my fitness has improved a lot. I did rest a couple of times, especially when three goats were blocking our path. I'm not comfortable with goats, they have an evil grin and try to eat your clothes-and dangerous looking horns. In my mind it was like finding crocodiles blocking my path, or maybe that troll. But really they were quite a bit more nervous of me than me of them. Our vdub handled the steep roads wonderfully. On the way back we visited Dunster Castle which I absolutely loved. The guides in the rooms were possibly the most fun I have met. We really didn't want to come back to London and plan to revisit after the summer rush. I hope the following link of some of my pictures works althjough I won't be surprised if it doesn't. If it does, note the Exmoor ponies that look like a pushmepullyou and the beautiful rainbow that came down in the bay. The photo doesn't do it justice, it was a breathtaking view. soapdragon
Congrats to you two! So glad you had a good time - sometimes spur of the moment/gut feeling things are the very best! Our 25th is coming up on 3/6 and we'll be away in Devon so plan lunch for us and boys at The Treby Arms - Chef Anton won Prof MasterChef year before last and we went last year. Fleeting but fab! bluekarin
Congratulations! Sounds wonderful. Tis a lovely area to go. My aunt had a holiday cottage in Watchet and my hubby and I went for a holiday there before we were married. We drove up the huge hill between Lynton and Lynmouth in our little green Allegro. I remember leaning forwards in our seats willing her up the hill We also went to Dunster castle and had photos taken under the huge spikey leaves in the garden. If we were there a week later, we could have gone to watch A Midsummer Nights Dream in the grounds

pips_pekins
Congratulations. Sounds like you had a lovely break. I don't know that area at all but am now intrigued to see the 'freakisly steep hill' and what sounds like a lovely town. I also love funiculars for some reason so another reason for us to visit.
