AlisonH
Charlie has been off colour for a few days and hasn't eaten much, not even her fav mealworms. Today I noticed that she has a squishy crop so I followed advice on massaging it. She brought up a lot of brown water and then drank lots more. She also keeps flicking her neck quite violently. Going to give some yoghurt but she seems reluctant to eat it. Should I try syringing it? Also, should I keep the massaging and making her sick or leave her to drink the water?? mollyripkim
I had a bantam orp with it and like you she brought up brown liquid. I separated her and didn't feed her for 24 hours but she had access to water. I also did the upside down thing carefully several times, then gave her natural yogurt and probiotics. Within a couple of days she was back to normal and hasn't had a relapse. I hope your girl is ok. She is a really greedy girl so I didn't need to syringe her, if you do the vet told me to do it at the side of her beak so they don't choke. AlisonH
Thank you, how much yoghurt should I try to get her to have?
Ain't Nobody Here
There's some useful info here. As well as the yoghurt, I used Daktarin Oral Gel (just a dab on your finger into the beak, as best you can!) and successfully treated sour crop twice. AlisonH
Thank you, where do you get the gel from?
AlisonH
And how often do you give the gel?
Ain't Nobody Here
Any chemist. I think it was once a day?
AlisonH
I'm currently treating charlie for sour crop. This morning I again made her sick ad she seems slightly better. I have taken away all food and her crop did seem much less balloony but how do I know when it's completely back to normal and when to stop making her sick? I've given her some egg and yoghurt though she wasn't fussed and didn't eat much.
Beantree
Any food intake only fuels the sour crop AlisonH. Water only until the crop stops feeling hot which should be 24 -48 hours. If it repeats again you may need to use a tiny amount Epsom Salts solution then restart the gut flora with probiotic yoghurt 24 hours afterwards. In worst cases sour crop results in fungal cankers and that needs other medication.
The Dogmother
Empty the crop (carefully) as much as you can, syringe her with about 2-3ml of neat ACV twice a day, and make sure she gets plenty of fluids with a good quality tonic in it. I would starve her for 24 hours to avoid making it any worse. Use ACV or Orego-Stim in the water on a regular basis thereafter.
AlisonH
Well I hope I'm not speaking too soon but Charlie definately seems to be on the mend. A chicken friend came round on Saturday as Charlie was so ill and was shocked at how bad she looked. She sat on my knee - Charlie, not the friend, and I could feel her drifting away so I fully expected her to have died Saturday night but Sunday morning she was still alive and we continued to syringe yoghurt in. By Monday morning there were small signs of improvement but having continued with the yoghurt, she today was fighting me off and spent the day digging a hole. She's eaten some pellets and a bit of sweet corn. She's lost a lot of weight but if she's eating again then hopefully she will start to build up again. So fingers crossed and thanks to my chicken friend who was very supportive and helpful during a rough weekend.
The Dogmother
Have you got any NutriDrops to give her?
mollyripkim
Really pleased she seems to be on the mend, it's horrible when they are poorly. Hope she continues to improve.
AlisonH
Are nutri drops similar to poultry tonic?
The Dogmother
'Similar'; they are a very concentrated form of nutrients and energy... positively miraculous in some cases!
chuckmum6
My elderly Pekin has just had a bout of sour crop, I drained her crop, starved her for just over 24hrs. I did take her to the vet as she sounded rather rattly, so has a course of antibiotics Oxycare, usually for dogs, she has a tablet a day as it sits in her crop longer. She is two days in and is back to her old self, she is even disciplining other hens with a quick peck!
AlisonH
My girl is completely better now, it took a while and she lost a lot of weight but she is now back to full health, eating like a trooper and has just started laying again. Amazing improvement as she was on the point of fading away and was extremely ill.
