WitchHazel
I've bought a couple of "new with tags" items of clothing from Ebay recently. The first one had a bit of a strange smell. At first I thought it was fab con, then I realised it couldn't be, as the item was new with tags. The second one, different seller, had a similar whiff about it. I've just opened another one, another seller again, and once more I was hit by this sickly smell. Then I realised, the sellers must be spraying the clothes with Febreeze! It's such a vile smell. Each time I open a parcel, the bedroom stinks of it for a couple of days. I really wish they wouldn't do it!
The Dogmother
I sometimes find that they have a strong smell of air freshener or even fag smoke. I usually mention this in my feedback as it really annoys me.
WitchHazel
I sometimes find that they have a strong smell of air freshener or even fag smoke. I usually mention this in my feedback as it really annoys me. Years ago the neice of one of my friends hosted an Ann Summers party. The clothes were poor quality, but I wanted to buy something because my friend's niece was the host. However, the Party person was a heavy smoker, and she kept her stock in the car. Everything reeked of cigarettes, it was awful. I just couldn't bring myself to buy anything.
Alis girls
Febreeze reminds me of the time the boys were into crabbing. On holiday in Mudeford I purchased some fish bait from the fishmonger and left it in the boot of the car. The sun came out temp shot up and you've guessed the rest. I was deposited outside the supermarket and came back armed with airfreshener and Febreeeze - not sure why - it was pretty new then and the ads were very enticing - car was liberally sprayed and windows opened - I was not popular for several days - I've never been allowed near fish bait again - not sure why
Cinnamon
Yes, it is to disguise the smell of cigarette smoke ....... if they have listed the item as coming from a 'smoke free home' & it arrives smelling of Febreeze or anything else, make sure you say so in the feedback you leave. soapdragon
I have not come across this much but have been very lucky that the vast majority of clothing has clearly been freshly laundered. However, other peoples washing powder etc does differ smell wise and so, whilst I leave feedback to say 'freshly laundered' into the machine it goes! However, I do wonder if some folk squirt a bit of Febreeze on instead of going down the washing/ironing route If, and its a BIG if, items smell of smoke then that is def mentioned in the feedback however amazing the item - as a non smoker its a big no-no not to mention a smoking household. I always add the 'smoke and pet free - apart from the hamster' bit to my listings so that people know!
merlina
I am very seriously allergic to Febreeze (and most petrochemical scents) so always open my parcels outside just in case - I know a lot of sellers don't bother to read the notes asking them not to do this. It really annoys me, especially when something is supposed to be 'new' , as by definition, something new hasn't been doused with chemicals (or at least any additional ones! ) But, to be fair to sellers, I've seen people with horrible feedback because clothes smelled of smoke or musty, I always put at the bottom of my auctions that the items come from a home where people smoke and where there are animals. I wish I could rely on this to make sure people who are bothered by such stuff don't bid on my stuff, but it seems people don't read the words in many cases Today I got some shoes. Lovely condition, absolutely filthy soles (looks like they've wandered thro chook poo! ). Why wouldn't someone wipe them before parcelling them up?? Alis girls
Doesnt say anything about fish smells then? I will be buying nothing clothes wise from Ebay. I have asthma and wheeze with deodorant esp Lynx which teenagers love soo much.
Cinnamon
I have just had a pair of 'barely used' Converse sneakers sent to me, which have near knocked me out with their cheesy feet stench They will be going straight back to the seller! Cinnamon
Indeed. Just had a message back from the seller saying that she herself had bought them as used on eBay but was selling them on for the smelly reason! Blinking cheek! Still I am getting a refund & my return postage, so not too much harm done
WitchHazel
Indeed. Just had a message back from the seller saying that she herself had bought them as used on eBay but was selling them on for the smelly reason! That's appalling! Cheeky moo. She should have got her money back from the seller and either returned the trainers or put them in the bin.
Egluntyne
Blimey! What brass neck. Why did she not return them to the original seller herself?
The Dogmother
I can't believe that she did that... let alone admit it to you!!!!
Cinnamon
Uh huh - clearly a few sandwiches short of a picnic
soapdragon
Urghhhh Its an awful cliche but......I REALLY wouldn't sell anything anywhere that I would not be happy to buy. As a seller anywhere being totally honest is so important and it makes me so mad that some people just take the doodah! Surely they realise that its not going to go well if something is a bit dodgy Joined up thinking, I reckon
chickencam
Maybe this is what the skater skirt which I bought for my YD smelt of when I got it in the post, very sickly like cheap sweets. I too would not sell anything in a condition that I wouldn't buy myself. I always wash clothes when I get them them in because I am fearful of importing bed bugs with fabric items. merlina
bedbugs!! never thought of that one they can live on clothes in the post? eeep!
The Dogmother
Yep. Most common way of importing them..... that and clothes from charity shops; a neighbour had to get the pest control bods in to fumigate her whole house after a charity shop bed bug problem. WitchHazel
Oh Gross! Thank you for the warning. I usually only buy clothes listed as new, but I'll make sure I wash everything as soon as it arrives now. Ugh ugh ugh.
merlina
Hmm. a lot of the stuff I buy is vintage and doesn't take kindly to being washed. Putting things in the freezer is supposed to kill clothes moths (so I tend to do that) Would that kill bedbugs too? I feel a large dose of paranoia coming on.... Cinnamon
I have just received a 'brand new & unworn' Tankini top that totally reeks of chlorine Do people think we are stupid of something?
merlina
Heh - yes they do I was just looking at 'new without tags' exercise trousers That clearly have those creases at the top of the thighs that happen with not insubstantial wearing. WitchHazel
I have just received a 'brand new & unworn' Tankini top that totally reeks of chlorine Do people think we are stupid of something? Blooming cheek. What did the seller say when you complained? Heh - yes they do I was just looking at 'new without tags' exercise trousers That clearly have those creases at the top of the thighs that happen with not insubstantial wearing. I always watch for that when lookinh at "New with tags" items as well. I swear that some people keep the removed tags then put them back on the clothes. Cinnamon
I have opened a case - yet to hear back. There is a chunk of undone stitching on the back too that I have noticed now
