MiniMinx
Well after waiting what seems like months (only in fact 6 weeks) my purple cube and 4 chickens finally arrived on Wednesday!! They've settled in really well and we've even had our first egg today!! Have took some pictures - will post them soon (currently spending all free time in the garden!) I do have a small query though - yesterday I noticed a yellow icky substance in the run, and i wondered if it was perhaps a shellless egg , but i've noticed theres a couple more in there today - what is this and should I be worried? Christian
Hello MiniMinx and welcome to the world of chickens! It is probably a runny poo, don't worry about it too much. they are still settling in. The poos should return to normal soon!
MiniMinx
Here are the pics i promised - hopefully this works okay.... Ginger & Millie: Betty & Wilma: Oh we had another egg last night - this time from Millie - she'd laid a soft egg in the run right in front of us at about 8:45 last night!! Egluntyne
One in every 10 or so poo's is a runny curry sauce effect blob. It comes from the caecum and is perfectly normal.
MiniMinx
Thanks - that is reassuring to know

Richard
One in every 10 or so poo's is a runny curry sauce effect blob. It comes from the caecum and is perfectly normal. I've been out there all day counting each one, and my research leads me to the conclusion that actually 97.5 out of every 1000 poos are, in technical terms, a runny curry sauce job (the 0.5 was one that was on the fence) (well not actually on the fence, but on the fence as regards being an RCS jobby) (if you see what I mean). Actually I'm telling a fib. I wasn't out there counting at all - but I have every faith in Egluntine's expert knowledge! Snowy
And we wonder why the NHS is in such a bad way these days!
Richard
yep ... Sad isn't it? By the way, Egluntine's name isn't quite the same but it reminds me of the Borrowers (forget this Harry Potter stuff, Mary Norton was real quality). Arriety's cousin (the one who went missing, possible eaten by a cat) was called something like Eggletina (Uncle Hendreary's daughter. She may also have been 'seen' by the Boy, but I can't quite remember). They were all from the Clock family. Fantastic set of books which I read when I was many many years younger (chronologically speaking, as mentally I may not have grown up a lot since then). Any one else remember them? Christian
How weird Richard! My Mum was talking about the Borrowers a few weeks ago and I have just finished reading the first one. Lovely books!!!
Ladylucan
Love the cube piccy, can i ask what do you have in the bottom of the run xx Never mind Richard, Bless.
Richard
Like most series of books, the first is by far the best (imo). However, the Borrowers Afield and Afloat are worth reading as well (not so keen on Aloft). they were written in the 50's and I found them absolutely rivetting when I was a youngster (and still do think they are great). My best friend at school was nicknamed Pod after Arriety's dad. Ah, those were the days - no wizards, superhuman beings etc. just tiny versions of humans, living under the floorboards, living off the bits they could scavenge from the 'human beans'. Mind you, when you come to think of it, what does happen to all the biros, bits of pencil, paperclips etc. that you put down and then can't find. And I have heard noises under our floorboards - maybe ......

MiniMinx
Hi Tracey We are using a mixture of woodchippings and aubiose, at the moment we are just adding a few handfuls of aubiose everyday rather than starting off with a thick layer - it seems to be keeping things reasonably clean so far. Ladylucan
I have stripped my ground completely of bark and am about to put 4 bales of Auboise down, will it be ok to put the whole thing down in one go?? or should i do it gradually x
