SueChick
I wonder if someone could help me out here - I have just read a post about the use of Biotin for re growth of feathers and I think this would be very useful for my recovering hen (bad case of bullying and depluming mite has left her in poor feather condition). Although she is slowly getting better (new free range area has been made and loads more enrichment ideas to prevent boredom), I think her protein levels and natural oils are low. I have been giving tuna and scrambled eggs and mealworms but wondered if Biotin would help? Dogmother I think you said you drizzle cod liver oil on the pellets and sprinkle Biotin on? How much would I use and for how long please? Also would it be ok for my other hens? I have two 21 week olds - one laying, one not yet. Would this be safe for them too? Thanks for the tip. jimnpaula
I've just bought some (probably off the back of the advice given in one of your posts) and was also wondering quite how much to give. I've found this response from The Dogmother in the thread Bumpa bit now fitted The newbies may well moult this autumn, but just a small moult; the general rule of thumb is that if they were hatched before the longest day, then they will moult that autumn. Those hatched after that day probably won't. As I said, this is just a rule of thumb though. New ex-batts may well moult, and they will grow through a new set of feathers more suited to their new surroundings. Support them in this with some good poultry tonic in their water and add a tablespoon of Biotin powder (NAF make this as horse feed) to about 2 litres of pellets. The Dogmother
Yep, that's right. Hard boiled egg is also a good source of Biotin, but mineseem to fare well with just the powdered Biotin on their pellets.
