JanTheDiver
I got two speckledys in May, one went broody on 26th August, I put her in the cage of shame for three days and all was fine. Then the other speckledy went broody on 21st September, she came out of the cage of shame today and is fine (at the moment). Now the first one has gone broody again, so she is now back in the cage of shame for three nights! Are Speckledy's more prone to going broody or am I just unlucky with these two? I don't like putting them in the cage but I can't let them sit on eggs as I don't have the room unfortunately. I am hoping that this might be it for this year, but who know's
Chickabee
I think it's just luck of the draw with Hybrids. They either go broody or don't. I've only ever had one that did and she was evil when in broody mode. My Silkie is sort of broody at the moment. Every one else seems to be moulting I think your dealing with it well. I just leave mine to it. My light sussex bantam (just realised she must be a hybrid) was broody for ages this summer, then moulted. Finally started laying again a week or so ago. Fingers crossed she won't go broody again til next year.
jackian
I think it is Speckldeys.. I had a lovely girl Shadow at the end of January at 20 weeks old by March 16th she laid her first egg and April 12th went broody ..This lasted for 7 weeks till the end june . It caused a lot of upset with the other girls although I found it more of a nuisance than a problem.I had a bit of the run separated and every morning would take her out of the coup growling and snarling at put her on her own .if she could get in the nest box she would and that is where she would stay. By July 10 she was broody again and this lasted 3 weeks. She had laid 4 eggs . August came and she was broody again .I phoned the farm we brought her from and he offered to take her back to use for hatching eggs.My friend and I took her back still broody and we all had a result ..The farmer as he could use her to hatch eggs ,me because with only a small little flock it was not working out ,the other girls as they had their nest box back and her because she could become a mum . JanTheDiver
Thanks both I only have a flock of 7 in the back garden so not any spare room to let them ride out their hormones. If it gets too often I will have to find a friendly farmer When not hormonal they are lovely girls and we have had quite a few eggs (very small) from them. We will see how it goes.... dancing cloud
It might just be speckledy's. Marguerite has been broody at least three times this year (it may have been four, I lost count) and is a right moody vicious wotsit when she's broody. Shouting, swearing, pecking, she does it all . Myrtle Bluebell hasn't been broody once. When Marguerite's not broody, she's quite a lovely friendly, chatty, little soul, but when she's broody she is really not nice!
