Black Friday

Recommended Posts

Saronne, I would just like to say that I also dislike such stereotyping of any people. This country, GB, has it's own underbelly of not so bright people and I would be unhappy if we were all judged by their standards. America is so vast and each state so different. I thoroughly enjoy and embrace elements of American culture especially the gardening. We need a programme about American gardening, I've seen some very interesting ones on instagram. I had a great day this week with YS cooking a big thanksgiving meal just for the fun of it. An interesting statistic is that the average IQ of 70yr olds in USA is that of 60yr olds in the UK.

Maybe it's because I live where I do that I see lots to celebrate in our mixed up British culture and I certainly don't feel all that nostalgic for how things used to be. I think it's much more fun now. I think white English are a minority here now but my town which was dead for years is really starting to buzz. People celebrate Christmas in a variety of ways and I think that has it's own magic.

I think it's the retailers cottoning on to an "Americanism" to sell all the old tat they can't get rid of through the year and gullable and greedy consumers thinking they are getting a bargain..I hate those grabby type, as seen on the news

Wake up people there is no such thing as a free lunch!!!

I whole heartedly agree with patsylabrasor....I live in a fairly diverse area and I think it's grand to see a the different religious celebrations.

Thank you Clare for reminding us about the true meaning of Christmas. Sorry to hear it may be the last for some of them and thinking of you too Gavclojak - making it pleasant for them is lovely of you both, I felt quite humbled by your post. I have my elderly dad each year (not always a joy as hes got slight vascular dementia and can be a grump) , my mad aunt and her husband who come for the day. They are all 80 or nearly and I remind myself and my grumpy 13 yr old that its ONE day when they moan. One day out of 365. So many elderly spend time alone. My aunt hurt her leg getting over a style and cant drive :wall: my uncle I think is showing the first sign of memory probs - he doesnt like doctors so I dont think will accept help. I have started getting presents for people but refuse to go sales etc as I cant cope with the crowds.

Mind you the lakeland one sounds fun  might give that a look. :D - hugs Ali xx

One thing which brings home the Christmas spirit to me every year is a local lady (Polly) who voluntarily feeds the homeless every evening at 6pm outside the local church; she relies on handouts from local companies, some of them food manufacturers/stores, and donations from individuals. Polly is there every day come rain or shine, with her bike and trailer full of hot soup and food for the homeless. She's an absolute angel to them.

Thanks Ali, your words are very sweet.

My lovely daughter in law hosts tea parties once a month for old folk from a nursing home who don't have families locally as her granny is in Wales, they are her faux grannies. We are having a Christmas morning brunch with them which will be nice.

One of the dentist I work for takes a day off in the week to volunteer for a charity, she also sponsors a child and Christmas Eve she volunteers for crisis at Chrismas. She is inspirational

Thanks, patsylabrador. You're right. It's the stereotyping of an entire nation that I object to - but I blame the media for that. They've a lot to answer for.

I live in Leicester(shire) and frequently visit the city centre , use the market and enjoy the diversity, too. I think in many ways we're a stronger more vibrant place because of the interesting mix of people and cultures. :D

I didn't realise this is the 4th year of it being over here. I hadn't noticed it before but being an avid sales avoider it probably didn't mean anything to me, but this year it's BLACK FRIDAY everywhere - you couldn't possibly miss it. I thought it was junk emails at first (well a fair amount was junk) but it was from companies I have purchased from - including Amazon. I did what I do best - ignore it. But seeing the people on the news made me quite horrified. Like looting but then paying for it (mostly). A frenzy that is so embarrassing. The fighting and the stealing that also went on! The only thing to do is to show our distaste by avoiding it - but judging from the screaming hoards they'll probably do it forever now.

Saw a comment on Facebook - it said "Black Friday: because only in America people trample each other for sales exactly one day after being thankful for what they already have".

Interestingly an item that I was going to purchase from Amazon (I didn't actually get round to the checkout bit so went back to have a look today) has gone up by £2. :eh: I removed it. I don't think it was part of a sale before and it isn't a must have either, but just a set of matching coasters to the place mats I have in the kitchen. I can make do without. :notalk:
