Chickabee
Over the past 6 weeks or so most of the chickens in my big coop have had the snuffles. No foaming eyes. They all got over it, then one of my growers/pullets got it again. I've just bought her in and put her in a dog cage. She's all feather and bone. There's always more than one feeder in their run. Plus veggies and feed blocks. She's just eaten a pile of vermex poultry zest and is tucking into some cat food. She's also whistling at me. Question is have I now got a house chicken for the winter. I could put her in with my little ones when she's put on some weight. Don't think I want her back in with the big girls if they're going to starve her
jimnpaula
A house chicken is great fun! At least for a while and as long as you have wipe clean floors Once they start to feel better and make more mess then it's time to go back outside. Obviously, the longer they are indoors possibly the harder to reintroduce them, but if your little ones are accomodating then it sounds like a good plan. Hen Solo indoors needed to lay an egg, 'this looks like a good spot'

jimnpaula
Lol, love it!! Is that the chicken gavclojak had? Yes, she's still a bit purple in this picture from all the purple spray that Lisa had put on her - nearly all gone now in this moult, it'll be the first time she's been purple-less since last year. She seems to enjoy being indoors, just as well as this was during her second time when Magic wouldn't stop pecking her bottom and making it bleed a bumper bit sorted that. redsunset
Chickabee, sorry I hijacked your thread there when I saw the pic of hen Solo! Re your chicken, yes I'd fatten her up a bit and put her in with your little ones. How old are your little ones, are they chicks or banty sized? I always have a large collapsible dog cage as its used for chook ER and has been out in my utility on a few occasions now!
Chickabee
I don't mind it being hi jacked. I love that photo what a lovely girlie. I have got her in a dog crate. No guide dog pups at the moment. My little ones are pullets apart from one. She's a pekin frizzle and very much keeps herself to herself. Apart from when she's broody, then she wants to kill me
redsunset
Ah, she will be fine with the pullets then and might make her top chook then
Chickabee
Meant to say, they are bantam pullets. She would love to be top hen, she's a crested cream legbar. Think I might have to clip a wing as these ones free range all day every day
Beantree
Vermex poultry Zest is just a mineral supplement Chickabee. Think you put 5 grammes in one Kg of feed. She may be thin for a number of reasons so I'd start by putting her on rearers pellets and making sure she is eating enough of them. Or you can make a wet warm mash using them to get her started if she has lost her appetite completely. Important she stays warm, so inside is best, but of course re-introducing her will be a problem. Chickabee
thanks Beantree. She's on growers now. The zest was just a small amount in a pot attached to the cage. It's now full of grit. She's in my utility room, so she is getting checked quite a lot. I put a cover over her cage at night so she doesn't get disturbed by people going in there.
