Kitchens - things to consider

Recommended Posts

Hmmm burgundy. Rich and opulent colour. Then again better than pink or sage that we had.

I used to be able to get it from Waitrose but they seem to do Method now (I find the Method marble and granite not quite up to the Astonish level, but used it up on the tiles - made them sparkle, and now just use their Method multi for the tiles). So I buy direct online and get a case, but you might prefer to just have the one Mrs Wembley to test. It does say a lot of supermarkets should do it. Anyway extra bonus is cruelty free and vegan friendly!

It is a liquid, so I just squirt a bit of it on and then wipe it over with an old flannel, I like to leave it a short while before wiping off with some kitchen roll. And then if it hasn't removed the cooking splashes then I use the flannel to give it a bit of a harder rub and that usually does the trick. But ooooooooooh so nice!!!

 I'm glad I'm not alone there Bluekarin!

I too have a green bathroom suite and I actually like the colour, it is quite a pale soft green. I painted the tiles white this time last year and they look great, we changed the flooring too, it suits my quirky nature.

We are about to redecorate the kitchen, it was originally 1980's varnished wood, but I painted it years ago, firstly the same sort of soft green that I have in the bathroom, then a stronger more modern jade green about 5 years ago. We managed to replace the odd few patterned tiles with plain ones which also modernised it and all of the door k"Ooops, word censored!"s for stainless steel. We want to replace the flooring and breakfast bar, but apart from that we will be sticking as we are. My work tops are amazingly heat proof and I like having a kitchen that I am not too precious about.

Your thoughts please on whether the tiles will look odd.

Shiny light grey units with emerald pearl worktop, grey wood flooring (tiles). One side of the kitchen white tiles with a grey hare behind hob. Then I'd like to put jade or turquoise tiles along opposite wall beneath wall cupboards. Ceiling and walls white.

Well apart from the tiles - which I like because I love green and I like the lighter green as a relief - I could almost be in my neighbour's kitchen! I suppose her grey is probably like a collared dove and the granite is the pretty black sparkly one too. She has bits of blue shining out as well.

Mine is a pine kitchen which I think as it ages I'm not so keen, so will probably have it painted a creamy colour. The tiles are sort of clotted cream and the paint is a slightly deeper shade. Clotted cream crust! Well maybe not so yellow. The flooring is multicoloured slate. In hindsight I'd have underfloor heating. I love the floor though although the protective covering hides the sparkly bits. Some look like glitter spillages - a bit of a pain if you break a glass and you are trying to clean up the sparkles that are attached to the floor! The granite top is multiple shades of brown and black. Hides a multitude of sins. It's only when you see the brown on the cleaning cloth you realise that someone didn't use the tray while pouring out their tea and didn't clean up after themselves.

I think it will look lovely - the jade will lift the room, I guess its your accent colour :D I love the clean lines and depth of the granite which you get from its reflective quality. I am feeling extremely jealous. We are having a bit of the bathroom fixed at the moment as we've had a leaky roof, its a fix not a redo, so absolutely nothing glamorous :( The walls have been stripped back to plaster and I've suddenly had a lightbulb moment looking at the brownish walls. Everything has been white to make the room look bigger, with some rustic blue and white tiles as its a country cottage, but actually if I invested in some luxurious limestone tiling and a new glass shower, and a smaller bath and a different sink I could actually have the small, but perfectly formed, creamy/stone coloured sophisticated bathroom of my dreams complete with moody lighting. Now, where did I put my purse

I have bathroom wall panels in our shower - no grout needed. They aren't as thick as tiles either. Sadly the idiot that installed it cut them too short. Very sad considering I'd seen the previous workmanship of said chippy which was fantastic, but because he wanted to retire and included his son-in-law things were going badly wrong. In fact the dopey young fellow even laid the floor tiles wrong and forgot the bathroom door opened outwards so we had a gap. He sealed the baths in and scratched the baths with his jeans pocket - or I guess it was that - as he sat on the side to put the sealant on. It got to a stage when I just wanted them out!

Thanks,

Valkyrie I can't believe your bathroom went so wrong, you must have been fuming. Did they put it right?

I'll stick with Daphne's mood bathroom but I do like the sound of your clotted cream crusted units and sparkly floor  I'd be dancing at the sink in the mornings

They tried to rub off a chip that we pointed out before they even got to the sealant. They made it worse and suggested a sticker with the name of the bath manufacturer on it. We said forget it - it's stupid. They put a new window ledge in - made of 2 rough planks and I ended up sanding it down. I still hate it. The other one they just put MDF and now it's horrible. By the time I'd spotted they hadn't removed the old tiles on the windowledge in the downstairs loo I couldn't be bothered to point it out. And the shelf in the downstairs loo is also made of MDF which didn't match the thickness of the wood at the edges - so they stuck in hardboard as filler!

Like I said I'd seen his work and he was really, really good. I can't understand how awful it was with us. Denise had him back to replace a shower screen - and was upset at the mess made and was upset at our ordeal with him. Since then I've been on Checkatrade and been really happy with the outcome. We now have a builder that can do things that we ask and we know it will be good as he has to keep up his ratings (although I wasn't impressed with his plasterer and as he was a former Hells Angel I didn't want to push my luck)! We have an electrician that is good and a plasterer that leaves walls so silky smooth and only the lady decorator (another one prior to Checkatrade) could ruin that with drip splodges all over the walls and doors. Since then via Checkatrade we have a great painter with his daughter that we will use again. Our front door I would have liked done by a different company but OH wanted to cut costs and although it's a nice door - I would have rather it have been reframed and then the door made to fit the frame rather than a pre-made unit. Sometimes you get what you paid for. So the idea is to get Paul the builder to come and do the window ledges and tart up the bathroom.

I like the tongue and grooved half walls though, so will keep them. We did with hold some of the money until he agreed to knock some off with regard to the baths.

I remember that colour - our bathroom tiles at home matched it when I was growing up, maybe we had a suite that colour as well. I think its called Aqua :D Does anyone else remember those tiles which were a vague pattern on a white background, it always looked like penguins leaning forward to me! Everybody had them in the 1970s and you could get them in a range of colours which exactly matched the bathroom suite, I can remember yellow, pink, coffee and this aqua colour

We seem to have left kitchens behind, sorry that was my fault!

It's all right the mods are asleep so they can't rap our knuckles. Yes we had the turquoise white tiles and turquoise suite in the 70's. It was darker than yours. I get all nostalgic when I see those tiles anywhere now together with the green fairy paper we had in our bedroom.

I remember those tiles too!

We had the turquoise tiles when I was a little girl in the early seventies and I remember picturing a bird in the pattern.

That brings back loads of memories of me as a little girl spotting the 'birds'. I used to love 'finding' them as all the tiles were all orientated differently. It meant that I had to really search to find the pattern. I used to feel quite pleased with myself when I'd picked a few out :D

This is what I have done and I take full responsibility! There's a bit more, the cooker and the quite crazy cupboard that used to be a larder. I love working in the kitchen now, it feels like I'm cooking in a cartoon. I wanted my kitchen to make me feel happy and this does that. Still some finessing to do but this is pretty much it.
