Plum
I've a small kitchen which we are having replaced shortly. We've been looking at the confusing world of built under double ovens. It seems the grill door has to be closed which means I couldn't use my griddle pan which I love. Is that right? I'd be grateful for any advice, recommendations or reviews. kinsk
They seem to vary mine specifically says to keep the grill door open. Mine is a Stoves Newholme if that helps, but it is 6-7 years old so they will have probably changed it by now.
Plum
Thank you I'll have a look at them. Does the air vent out the front? I was wondering how hot it gets and if the controls get hot. It's very confusing, the rest of the kitchen is going to be as bad
CatieB
My current double oven has a top grill and the door doesn't have to be closed. In fact it can be used open or closed - when closed the temp is shown in degrees and when the door is open its shown 1-4. Hubby grills with door open....Im currently in the process of changing my kitchen and we were talking about the fact I don't grill only my hubby does. When we started looking we were adamant we would have a double oven, for the sole purpose of a separate grill in the top oven. However having looked around we changed our mind completely and have fallen in love with a single oven as it has a temp probe in it and is self cleaning. We often cook by probe so it seemed best for us.....however I am wondering how we will get on grilling in a single oven that DOES require a closed door. We came to the conclusion we would use our griddle on the top under the extractor fan as a good compromise so Im interested that you use yours under the grill??? For even cooking? Anyway current oven is an Electrolux. I think it does have a vent at the front but the controls are touch not k"Ooops, word censored!" style so I've never noticed it as an issue but as I say i don't grill. Plum
The griddle works well in the grill, it cooks both sides well. My husband started it, I don't think he realised it's designed for the top. I don't know about probes but that sounds good for you. We've spent today agonising over choices and looking at different models and reviews. We've thought of the single oven but need to warm plates and we do grill at same time as use the oven - things like fish fingers and chips etc but we could cook in an oven. Just need to change habits. We've never had a grill that's an oven before so with a double oven it will be really handy being able to cook at 2 temperatures. There are so many pros and cons! I keep saying we'll never get a turkey in it but as we've had turkey breasts for years it's really irrelevant. Top choice at the moment is a Kenwood double built under with really good reviews http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/built-in-appliances/built-in-cooking/ovens/built-under-ovens/kenwood-kdbu-170-electric-built-under-double-oven-brushed-steel-black-13828813-pdt.html but they are only supplied by currys and they're out of stock. Back to the drawing board
Louise
Am I the only dinosaur that wants an oven with hob and eye level grill in one appliance as they used to be??? Oh and it has to be all gas
The Dogmother
You may think you're a dinosaur Louise, but a lovely one! I'm not entirely sure what 'built under oven' is, but my range has 3 ovens and one of the is a top oven/grill; when the door is closed, it operates as an oven, and when it's oven it operates as a grill. It's a 90cm Leisure (same as Rangemaster) dual fuel range.
Plum
Do for me fine but kitchens midget Am I the only dinosaur that wants an oven with hob and eye level grill in one appliance as they used to be??? Oh and it has to be all gas and if anything like mine with nice brown streaks going down the side in the gap yuk. I dread it when our cooker is taken out there'll be dried up strands of spaghetti, dusty baked beans and goodness knows what probably a few cat toys as well. Louise
No haven't space for range style and gas ovens with grills are few and far between nightmare as I hate electric ovens
Chickabee
Gas ovens are hard to get. People who want to fix them when they go wrong even harder! Toast doesn't get any better than when it's done under an old fashioned style eye level grill. That's a fact!
Plum
Why do you hate electric ovens? Until now I've had gas. I thought they cooked more evenly
The Dogmother
Me too; I always had gas ovens until about 5 years ago, and this one is MUCH better. Louise, my kitchen is far smaller than yours, and I have a 90cm range with 3 ovens (do a lot of cooking) I love it to bits.... but it's personal preference I guess. If you were closer, I'd offer for you to come down and have a play with it.

The Dogmother
I stack the plates in a sink with some hot water - quick dry and they're still hot.

Might be coming down your way soon as I have a last request for my dad so have to go to Cheltenham so might be able to pop in no idea of dates as yet though Every electric oven I have used has been a nightmare, I cook from scratch and like being able to vary temperature for several things by positioning them in the oven just old fashioned I guess
The Dogmother
I used to do that with the old gas oven - moved things around, or covered them in foil! Do let me know when you're over this way - will hope to be around to catch up, or offer a room for the night.
Angie
My present oven a Zanussi electric, pyrolitic cleaning , is built in a tall unit with my micro above it...can't use an under oven due to arthritis. It has a large capacity and built in grill you can use with door closed. This is the best oven I have had in 20 + years. It cooks as it says and with the temp it says. It is a multi function oven and I can use it as a fan or conventional. Cakes and pastry come out perfect as do my Yorkshires. Since I had my kitchen done over a year now and with the oven up at waist height , I can honestly say cooking has become a joy again. But as an oldie , I do miss my Gas newholme cooker with fold down grill . Now that was a cooker and a half, but times move on .
