Alis girls
Bet that got you attention. My young girl (I only have 2) has lost some feathers from lower tummy. The area was a bit sore sprayed the evil spray on it to stop any pecking by the other madam. I have noticed as few flies around and panicked today as I am worried re fly strike - the run my new WIR built by lovely OH is clean - I pooh pick every other day and its dry but I decided today to bath her. Cue for a mega cussing session from Rhoda and a fair amount from me esp when she escaped. No maggots seen and I realise the smell is the evil spray which i cant get rid of - I can smell it everywhere - even thou I wore gloves and dried her well I can smell it. I blow dried her drawers and left her with some sweetcorn to munch in cat carrier in garage and after a while put her back with her mate. One of them is laying - both have red combs but the others 5 yrs old. Anything else I can do. Shes eating fairly well - every so often she looks a bit miserable but cant find any lumps etc and I dont think shes broody. You know even after 5 yrs of chicken keeping I still worry about the girlies and am a stressed mum when things are not going well. I know you cant use fly strike stuff on chucks. Oh and they have been wormed. Any ideas would be appreciated - next stop will be vet I think.
gavclojak
No advice as I think your doing the right thing, ke ping her clean and dry, I am absolutely terrified of fly strike, it fills me with horror and is apparently common in rabbits? The guy from omlet who put the cube together said it only eer happens on an open wound but not sure, I thought it could happen on messy damp knickers.... Alis girls
Thanks Gavclojak - I am no expert and thought a smelly bum might also be a magnet for the horrible flies. Hate hate hate them. The area is red but no weepy sores. Beantree seemed to suggest a bumpa bit which maggie my only other hen has might not be protection enough. Strangely nos found many feathers. Anyway will keep an eye out and if no better vet it is.
gavclojak
Maybe try a little layer of sudocrem. Maybe you haven't found feathers because they have been eaten?
Alis girls
I frightened my self witless googling it we used to put some evil smelling concoction on the buns but not licensed for hens apparently. Why is nothing licensed for hens? Its a nightmare trying to keep them healthy and clean. I will never have hens with feathery legs - couldnt cope with the maintenance. But I will keep a beady eye on her rear. That antibite spray is evil - its good at what it does but the smell lingers - I can smell it on my hands despite gloves and washing. gavclojak
Oh thanks I can get some - i take it she wont preen it off. She is getting cross at my preoccupational with her nether regions. I would apply a thin layer, she might try to preen it but I' would rub in a small amount I think it may help. I used it when one of my girls were getting picked on. I bet she is wondering what is going on
Chickabee
Sudocrem is wonderful stuff. I've got through gallons of it. Used it for my 4 babies. Number 2 decorated my friends carpet with it (not. So great). Used it on my horses and on my dogs. Always worth having some in medicine cabinet. Think we used it on the stables cat too
Valkyrie
I have a tea tree spray that soothes. It also is a little smelly so perhaps that would sort out 2 problems - pecking and the sore. Um, if she's got a messy bottom would it be northern mite - I've been battling that and that looks like a pooey bot. Then they peck at their feathers and the skin turns red when exposed to the light - it isn't sore, just the way it goes. Mine have been frontlined now, but I'm waiting for a bit warmer weather to have a shampoo and blow dry session.
Alis girls
Havent seen any mites - wouldnt my other hen have them too? Is front line the stuff you put on cats? Can u use on hens? Or is that the bunny stuff you rub on their backs tummys and nether regions. My sons think I am a pervert. Cant help my obsessions with all things bottom can I? I think it comes of being a chicken owner and prob a nurse. Oh dear.
Alis girls
Checked for lice, mites you name it I checked - cant see anything and I had my specs on too Bum is bald and a bit red - will get sudocream tomorrow. Have applied powder to both girls and Rhoda now runs when she sees me not sure why?
Valkyrie
Yep, they know all right - here she comes again with that stuff . . . RUNNNNNNNNNNN!!! Sounds like someone just likes pecking feathers then. I've noticed the maran does that to the buff Sussex so last time that happened I sprayed purple stuff on her. Changes the red bum to purple and all the feathers grew back reasonably quick. If the weather's the same tomorrow then I will be doing a bit of a hairdressing service and wash and blow dry the bums. The pekin is fine though. PixieDust
My 3 love gentian violet. I sprayed Pixie's little foot wound and the other 2 started pecking it. So I sprayed their feet too. They looked confused and stopped.
gavclojak
My 3 love gentian violet. I sprayed Pixie's little foot wound and the other 2 started pecking it. So I sprayed their feet too. They looked confused and stopped. I know some people find it invaluable and I do have some in my chook medicine box but I have had cause to use it twice and both times it has drawn attention to the poor picked on hen. They all wanted to see why she was purple and still had a go.... maybe they would have with or without the spray but they are so intelligent and inquisitive, for me it just didn't work. Alis girls
Well today Rhoda decided I wasnt getting her corn fast enough and joined me to adminster her treat whilst keeping a beady eye on me in case I became fixated on her bottom area
Alis girls
Did another spray with the evil spray today - she did have some meal worms as a treat so cant complain but she did. Little tart.
