Valkyrie
Well at the beginning of May I emailed Elanco and apparently I must not copy and paste the email or disclose the contents - which implies they have something to hide - doesn't really make me trust them at all. I have since been told by the company that I ordered my pot from that they are still unable to get hold of it. So I have just written to Elanco again to express my disappointment. I don't like the ready made pellets - I did give the girls some in June before I went on holiday, but I don't think it is as effective as when I add the powder to their usual food - and then I can add it to their corn tea mix, so it's just routine with a slight difference. Luckily I have a vacuum sealer so I have managed not to waste so much pellets, but some bags I did have to throw away as the air had got to them. Even so I still have enough left over for the next session. If I didn't have the sealer it would be a huge waste of money for such a small flock. And even then they really hate Marriages feed with or without Flubenvet!
The Dogmother
Hi Val, sorry to hear that. I know that some outlets still have the pots of powder available as I saw some last time I popped into my vet. I know that you don't use them, but I have found the pellets to still be easily available... well, at least for the moment!
Guest
Just to show how contrary hens are my girls will now ONLY eat Marriages pellets. grrrr
mrsatroy
I'm in the South of Ireland and there were only a couple of online retailers in the UK that would ship to Ireland. Flubenvet isn't available in Ireland - I can't find any online retailer now that has Flubenvet available. Marriages pellets aren't available here either. I have just wormed my lot but I know I haven't enough to do them again in a few months.
Ain't Nobody Here
Do you all think the use by date for Flubenvet is really necessary to abide by? How would it suddenly become ineffective one month to the next?
The Dogmother
I'm no chemist, but I would be happy to use it a month over the use by date.
Blackrocksrock
And I would and have used it 3 months over date with no problems - provided you keep it in a cool place and do not leave it to get hot it should be fine.

Maybe I should haggle over the price of the one at my local vets that was £34 and ran out in October then ?
The Dogmother
Last October? I wouldn't bother. They shouldn't keep it on the shelves any way. If you transfer any unused pellets to an airtight container, then they should keep for a month past the use by date, but that's just my personal advice. Luvachicken
Sorry Dogmother, my bad English, I should have put runs out in October. The Flubenvet at my local vet (not one I use) runs out October 2015.
PixieDust
Luckily my girls love the pellets as they have Marriages anyway. My friend has always dosed her chickens by "pouring some Panacur down their necks." I don't know what dose is used but she has found that with ACV and garlic effective. I could ask her what dose so if anyone chooses, they have a back up?
The Dogmother
Please note that while this person might be recommending Panacur in good faith, it isn't licensed for use on poultry in the UK, so while many vets may prescribe it off-label, we can't be seen to endorse its use IF you were to be prescribed it....the dosage is by weight, and is on the bottle, you have to withdraw eggs from human consumption while dosing, and for 7 days after the last dose. Actually off licence drugs under the Cascade system the withdrawal is always 28 days eggs or meat withdrawal.
The Dogmother
Thanks for that info; my vet told me 7 days on the occasion that he prescribed it for gape worm.

Beg your pardon tis 7 days for eggs and milk and 28 days for meat withdrawal.

Absolutely. She works at a vets and guess it's the reason why she uses it. Of course Flubenvet is the only licensed wormer for poultry. Valkyrie
Seems that the 2.5 version is also unavailable. On one site it said that this product is no longer being produced! I've heard nothing from Elanco. I am disgusted - so if the only way to worm is to buy big feed companies stuff then it seems they have a monopoly going there. Mine will not touch the ordinary Marriages pellets either. Perhaps the other organic one will do their version soon in that case - the pellets are smaller too. Lewis
They'll eat the pellets eventually rather than go hungry - I know Heygates also do Flubenvet pellets but Smallholder won't as theirs is a drug free mill. There are a couple other drugs that can be used for worming (Solubenol is a white liquid used for worming pigs) but I believe it was sticking to the bottom of drinkers rather than mixing properly, which is why it's not commonly used. I get a Fecal Worm Egg Count done from a flock sample one a year and see if they actually need worming, rather than routinely worming every 3 months as people used to do. Lewis
There are a few companies offering the service online but your vets may do it too as it's simple enough, we do our own at Uni once a month. Retfords and Westgate Laboratories are good, they say to get a sample from each chicken but I would get one representative flock sample rather than paying for 12 individual tests. Chucky Mama
Latest update I have is that wholesalers (via Elanco) are hoping to have stock in warehouses on 4/8/2015.

Valkyrie
I won't hold my breath - they told my supplier that it isn't in production at the moment. Last I heard from Elanco was June at the latest. I think they are fobbing people off. Probably get more money from feed companies who are desperate to pop it in their mix and compete against each other, so the little people are not worth bothering about. I mean they would have to get pots to put small quantities in and the cost versus a sack is to be considered in the profit game. I can't help it, I've become an exceedingly cynical old fogey! mollyripkim
I have just used the last of my Flubenvet to worm the girls, on day five and have run out to make the last couple of days up. Have managed to order some Marriages Pellets on eBay so hope they come before they finish what's in their feeders. I think they are eating more of the pellets than usual as they are not FRing as I thought I had enough. If not I guess I will just have to do them again in three months or get an worm count done.
