Rats through the run?

Recommended Posts

So sorry guys I bet this has been answered a zillion times but can a rat get through the wire around the bottom of the cube?

I have read they will tunnel under slabs so assume they can't otherwise why would they tunnel when they can just walk through

The reason I ask is I had trouble with rats a few months ago which now seems resolved but I have just changed my set up and my cube is outside the enclosure but attached.

Many thanks again everyone

Didn't have any rats inside cube run, definately had some around the garden but no evidence of them getting in. I had a trap behind the cube and caught a few.

Where the handles are for the wheels is the biggest gap so I just put some folded chicken wire over and secured with cable ties.

Funny enough that's exactly what I did about an hour ago!

Yes, they definitely can. Our cube is outside the run, too, and some years ago we rigged up chicken cam to see what was happening. When night fell all we saw were several pairs of rodent eyes glinting at us on the night vision!

We then watched them freely coming and going through the cube bit of the wire. The rest of the run is 1cm square Weldmesh and slabbed underneath, so there was no way they were getting in there.

A trip to B&Q to get smaller mesh ensued. The next night we saw no eyes glinting back but we did hear a lot of rodent teeth trying to break into the new mesh round the cube! After 2 nights they gave up. That was 7 years ago and, touch wood, they've not been back.
