Bantam Banter
Dear All, At the moment we have five lovely Pekin Bantams and are wondering whether they will get on with Cochins. Could you help me out? Regards, Chris
Cat tails
Hi Chris! Welcome to the wonderful world of chicken keeping! I have no Pekins or Cochin, but I know that Mullethunter and Luvachicken here have Pekins. Mullethunter keeps other breeds with the Pekins as well. But as you just started out, adding new chickens to an existing flock isn't easy.
Ursula123
Welcome Chris. I have a mixture of three pekins, exchequer leghorn and two hybrids and they all get on just fine. As Catails has said introductions are not always easy though
Luvachicken
I do have Pekins All I know is that Cochins are similar to Pekins, but a lot bigger. Lewis is very knowledgeable and told me this on a previous post : Pekins are True Bantams (with no LF version) and Cochins are Large Fowl (with no bantam version) They do have a similar shape and the Americans sometimes (annoyingly ) call Pekins, Cochin Bantams I don't know if that helps you. Good luck with any intros if you get new ones. And don't forget to show us photos once you have made 5 posts
mullethunter
Hello Chris As Cattails said I do have Pekins with other breeds but they are all bantams. They get on fine and although my Pekins are towards the bottom of the pecking order I think this is more to do with their individual temperaments rather than their breed or size. I think Cochins are very big for large fowl let alone compared to Pekins. Personally I would worry about that, but I know others have successful flocks of mixed sizes. Let us know what you decide
Minnie&Moose
Hi Chris, we have a cochin and a pekin living together, along with 2 other large fowl at the moment. Magda (cochin) is the only one we've had of this breed so far and as far as I'm concerned, providing I have room, I'll always have at least one cochin in the flock - she's by far the most sensible and gentle of our birds. We've had quite a few pekins over the years and most have been quite assertive and would occasionally try and bully Magda (who is 2nd in the hierarchy and has been for most of her life) but because of her size they can't get a grip on her. She, on the other hand, has never been rough with them though she did litterally walk over a pekin cockerel we had briefly (he was pretty love-struck with her; she wasn't impressed ). So, providing intros are done carefully (as always) and they have plenty of space I wouldn't expect any problems because of the size difference. Our cochin has also hatched bantam chicks for us previously - that was the cutest sight ever - enormous mother hen carrying six chicks in her feathers as she strode about the garden.
