They are getting on beautifully! I can depend on two eggs a day. They have stopped using the Eglu altogether except to lay their eggs. I haven't had to clean the Eglu forever because there has been literally NO poo issues in the 'Lu. I do have to squirt down the patio table daily that they have opted to roost on at night. I wonder if something spooked them and they just wanted to roost higher? I guess I will never know. Since they are out and about, they are not bothered by flies. . .but the flies do congregate on their food! I put out corn or whatever. . .and soon it is covered with flies if the girls aren't eating. Can anything be done about this? Maybe it's just something I will have to deal with until it cools down. . .??But thought I would ask.
Ladylucan
I love the first piccy of them, it looks like they are posing as models., and you can just picture them having a conversation between themselves about who looks best ..., ... Egluntyne
Are there no predators where you are John? They might be a bit vulnerable at night roosting on the table. Lovely pictures as always.
Looney
You could try putting some citronella oil on a piece of kitchen paper close to the food to try and repel the flies? Love the photos
arowland17
We've got a flitrap up which was recommended by someone on here and it is HEAVING with flies, before they used to settle on our fences, the patio, any chicken poop I didn't manage to collect up immediately and when the girls weren't in the run to peck them away there used to be loads there but now they all gather around the flitrap and the only time they are ever not there is if a stupid slug decides to crawl out the ground in the sun and shrivels up It took a few days to notice a difference with it but I'd recommend it - I would say though to hang it somewhere you dont go much so not near a patio as it does start to smell after a while and there are always flies near it. Have the unpleasant job of emptying it soon, not looking forward to that
Jules.
Lovely piccies! I have a flitrap, too. It took a bit to get going, but now it has caught loads of flies! I also put citronella & eucalyptus oil on kitchen roll under the eglu shade, & on the roosting bars.
arowland17
Jules H we have to empty ours fairly soon (for the 1st time) and were wondering if you have any advice on how!! it is rather stinky and we were going to spray fly killer spray into it before hand or they'd all fly up at us but are not sure where to dispose of everything?? didn't want to put it in compost bin as I expect the remainder of the powder will attract more flies to it, so were thinking of plastic bags and several of them all tied up then put them in rubbish bin.... any advice?!?
