Chicks a day early!

Recommended Posts

I was contacted by the hatchery that I could come and get my chicks a day early! We have been watching and holding them all evening. My 14 yr old is a chick whisperer. She picks one up and it quickly falls to sleep in her hands. They are such adorable balls of fluff! They all seem acclimated to food, water and where to get warm under their electric chicken. My only problem is I got several breeds and I can't figure some of them by breed!

How many did you get. You won't know breed or sex for quite a while. It's good to hold them and bond with them. I had 3 day olds 2 years ago. I sat and watched telly with them wriggling in my jumper. They're so easy to catch now, and will follow me everywhere

it can be quite easy to tell boys from girls if there's a mix of chicks with some breeds as the boys can have little combs at an early age girls don't it's not fool proof and I wouldn't use it as a reason to cull suspected male chicks at a few days old

breeds with a few exceptions will be hard to tell apart for a few weeks

are Easter eggers a large or smaller breed I don't mean batum sized as I'm not to sure what goes into their breeding in the states if their a smaller breed then I'd expect the chicks to be small

what breeds did you get?

I'm only going by assertive personality. None have any sign on a comb. I have 2 barred rocks, 2 Australorp, 2 easter eggers, a black copper maran and a golden laced Wyandotte.

So I have 7 various black chicks and a yellow one. The yellow is an easter egger and we think that we identified the other by her fluffy cheeks. She looks like a chipmunk! The Maran has feathered feet and the barred rocks have a small white dot on its head. The Australorp have white bellies and the skinny chipmunk is the golden laced Wyandotte. They all look so similar! I think we've figured them out, maybe! The two easter eggers are slightly bigger/fluffier then the others. I have no clue what they will grow up to be. I held my first chicken yesterday when I took them out of their box and introduced them to their water, feed and heater. The yellow chick had a 1/2 blocked vent this morning and I gently cleaned it up. They seem happy making little thrilling peep soft sounds.

Is it normal for them to sleep with their heads out from under the electric hen? I'm not sure what level to have it at.

electric hens should be about shoulder height of the chicks I found they soon come out from under it if they get too warm they will lie with their heads out if there's something to stimulate them in the room their in and it's a warm room

as long as they aren't really noisy not just the normal 'talking' and they have free access to food and water they should be fine come this time next week they'll be spending a bit less time under the 'hen' as their energy and stamina levels increase. the last lot I raised under a electric hen weaned themselves of the heat in 3 weeks

Here is the crew checking out the fresh food.

I think this is Gloria the Australorp

In the front is Henrietta. I think she is an easter egger. On the right in the back is Lacey the gold laced Wyandotte.

This sweet thing is Roxanne. I think she is a barred rock? She came right up to me and snuggled up in my hands. She likes her head to be gently stroked and between her wings.

I'm pretty sure its the same one who fell asleep with my oldest.
