Joojoo
Hi In preparation for the arrival of the eglu next week, I wondered if anyone has a list or details of "normal" garden plants that are dangerous to hens. We've got a well stocked flower/shrub garden and I want to make sure that none of it poses a problem for the hens before they arrive. Any advice or info would be gratefully received. Shirl
I asked the same question about 3 weeks ago. The title was something about poisinous plants. There was a fairly long list but I know ivy was on the list. I've got ivy in my garden and the chooks eat it and they're fine. Others have said it seems as if the chooks know what they shouldn't eat so I have decided to trust their instincts. Shirl

Christian
Things like foxgloves are poisonous, but my girls have eaten everything and are fine. I think they know what to avoid. Found the thread here Good luck!

Tracy T
We have a laburnum in our garden where the chooks are roaming. The pods/seeds are very poisonous and do look like caterpillars but the girls seems to ignore them. Foxgloves are also ignored. Seems like they do have some sense. Good luck with the new arrivals. They are great fun and very funny. I quite often sit down on a chair and watch them with a cup of tea. Just watch for them jumping up on your lap to see if there is anything for them in your hands! Nearly lost my fingers when they spied the dried fig I was snacking on! I then gave them some small bits which got seeds stuck to their beaks so they had to wipe their beaks on the ground to clean them. Looks so cute! Also tried to pinch extra bits off each other - very funny!
Joojoo
Thanks Tracy. Only 2 days to go hooray we just can't wait now. I'm pretty certain that they isn't anything too bad in our garden for them - I think they are going to be far more interested in the cats I don't think the cats hace the faintest idea that their worlds are going to be turned upside down on thursday. x
arowland17
I remember reading on here somewhere that clover is poisonous to them Was very worried as our lawn is full of it!! no way we could get rid of it all and we couldn't confine the chicks to the run when there is a garden there for them to free range in but they eat it and are absolutely fine - they naturally steer clear of some plants and eat others completely so I think they know what's good for them and what's not
urbanchick
I think clover is poisonous to horses but not chickens.
Joojoo
How do they react to daffodils? I know that I read on the other post that they are poisonous and I have loads of them in the garden which until they start to come up I can't pinpoint at the moment. Do they tend to ignore them?
