Richard
I know this was from another thread, but I can't remember what it was (which must tell you something being as I was the one who started it!). Anyway, I have refined the ramp/ladder up to my Cube (originally done so that Arrietty could get up to bed). Its beginning to look like a climbing wall, but it does make it a lot easier for them. It is cable tied onto the original Cube ladder. The green plastic chair is for me to sit on in the morning while I watch them come out of the cube (usually dressed in my pajamas and an old Barbour coat). No - I'm dressed in the pajamas and Barbour - they're dressed in feathers. I couldn't resist adding the piccy of Peckham in a tree
Snowy
Looks great Richard! Love the pic of Peckham - she's a bonny girl! Can't wait to see how mine cope with the cube ladder - especially Big Fat Bertha. She's only a pepperpot but I think she wants to be a Jersey Giant when she grows up! If they struggle, I'll be copying your ideas. Have you applied for the patents yet?

Not long to 17th September now! I should have put the modified ramp/ladder on from the start as they do find it much easier, and the brighter ones (North Holland and Maran) are walking in and out, whereas previously they flew out. Mind you, to be honest, they were the ones that had sussed walking in on the old ladder - the others flew/hopped up. the flying out in the morning was a riot - they all came out one by one straight after each other, landing all over the shop, on each others backs etc!. So now, with some walking down, it's much more sedate.

feemcg
Looks good Richard - my OH suggested something similar for big Sandy, as I don't want her sleeping on the run floor over the winter, and am also worried about where she's going to lay. May have to copy your design.
James H
yes, thats very good, did you make it yourself?
Richard
yes, thats very good, did you make it yourself? I'm afraid I did James - you'd struggle to buy something as random as that! I did actually want it to be irregular - I thought it looked more rustic! Thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

feemcg
Sandy is 22 weeks - she has spent a few nights in the Cube when I've lifted her in but has never made any attempt (that I've seen) to go up the ladder

They spent two or three weeks in the Eglu and then went into the Cube. They manage OK, but I am a bit worried about when they get bigger! Arrietty is the same age but has trouble with her legs and balence. At the moment she can get in, just, but struggles to move about in the Cube. Again, I'm worried about how she will manage when she gets bigger and heavier. She doesn't even try to walk up or down the ramp - she just hop/flies up to the top. I suppose I'm working on managing the challenges if and when they arise. At the moment the girls are coping.

They are a bit younger than the Orps - about 14 weeks cf the Orps at 17. How do yours compare in size? I thought that the Orpingtons were going to be a lot bigger and squarer than the Sussex, but at the moment they are looking very similar in size, especially considering how much of the Orps size is due to the loose feathering - feathers everywhere! Chocobo
the climbing wall looks great
Richard
I bought a load of three quarter inch square, planed wood. I used it for the extra sets of roosting bars I made for the Cube and the Eglu. Its slightly smaller than the original dimensions of the wood used for the bars, but does the job fine. I also used it for the legs, inner supports and roosting bars of the wooden coop I made. I used the cut off bits for some of the more promenant bits on the climbing wall/ramp. thats why they are random sizes - it was what s"Ooops, word censored!" cut off ends were around on my workbench at the time! I've found the spare set of roosting bars for the cube great. I just swop them over so there is a dry clean set in the cube straight away when I take the dirty ones out. Then I can scrub off the dirty bars and leave them to dry in the sun (or in the workshop) until I have to swop them with the other set in three or four days or so, when they've got dirty (I don't clean the bars every day , but don't like leaving it a week because they get so mucky). feemcg
The Buff Sussex are 16 weeks now and have almost caught up with the rest of the 'normal' sized girls, The Marans at 16 weeks are slightly smaller. It's quite funny because Sandy's best buddy is Ness, the silver-laced Wyandotte - they look like Laurel and Hardy
