Daisy's mum
Hi Laura We looked into getting a wind turbine from B&Q but found out that it would take SO long to pay for itself it wasn't worth it. I have seen lots of houses with solar panels on though so I might research those a bit. I will just google "are solar panels worth having" sure to find something...............! abwsco
I think there is a grant available of £300 but the lowest cost for solar panels is £3000. Was a bit on TV the other week but I wasn't concentrating on it too much when they said how little the grants were and the cost of the panels. The Dogmother
So far as I understand it (Phil's done a bit of research into the subject) it's only worth getting the water heating panels - the other ones just don't generate enough electricity to bother with, let alone cover your initial outlay. #If I had the money, I'd def. get some water heating panels. Guest
My neighbor has just put up the water heating panels. He is still using his windmill too - its a LOT bigger than the B&Q one and he still reckons it doesn't generate much. It sits on top of a lorry container too in a field and still doesn't generate much.
The Dogmother
'windbines' just aren't feasible in built up areas - there isn't enough wind and they can't pay back the outlay. One lot of people that Phil spoke to had problems where they'd had their turbine anchored onto the side of the house and the vibrations it generated when it WAS turning woggled the brickwork loose! Lesley and Carl might do well with a windbine - they're pretty exposed up there.
Lesley
Lesley and Carl might do well with a windbine - they're pretty exposed up there. But we'd still need a pretty hefty one - and they aren't cheap
Tiggy
we've had solar pannels for about 6 years they are great, & a back boiler behind out open fire, we hardly ever use the boiler now its great, now that fuel prices are so high we must be saving a fortune
Chuckov
Clare is right - an architect friend told me that most places in the UK are not exposed enough to make the most of a wind turbine. There is a site where you can work out what it's like where you live - will try find it!
