Introduction update

Recommended Posts

After sadly losing Scarlet last week and getting two new chicken friends for Honey just thought I would let you know how the introductions have gone.

Brought Pearl and Rose home on Saturday and put them straight in the eglu as told to do by the very nice lady at Garden poultry where we got them from.

At bedtime popped Honey in Eglu through the egg port and in the morning took Honey out the same way and let her free range and left the other two in the run, nearer to bed time I let Honey in with them and there was a little bit of pecking from her but nothing to worry about then they all went to bed together! The next morning I let them all out together and they have been fine.

I think I have been very very lucky with the introuctions, Honey has been quite civil and the youngsters have obviously been bowing down to her so things have been quite peaceful. I just hope it continues this way.

Thought I'd post some pictures of they happily wandering around the garden.

You have been very lucky but perhaps the numbers were more in your favour. We lost one of our original Pepperpots leaving us with 2 we then introduced two youngsters and all hell broke loose. I don't think that it helped that our White Star was very flighty and started running up and down in a panic every time the older ones came near which encouraged them to chase her.

A few days in we thought that we had some harminy then we realised that the older two were chasing the new ones into the eglu and then sitting guard outside which was stopping the new ones from getting enough food and water. We then had to turn the tables and shut them in the eglu whilst the new ones got some food and drink.

We divided the eglu run with canes as shown in an introduction thread on here somewhere which helped quite a lot,but one day we went out for a couple of hours and found that the 2 sets of chickens had swapped sides. We have no idea how they did it because we thought all the gaps were too small.

Nearly 2 weeks in we are doing much better and they are now all in the run together but the older two still chase them indoors quite a lot but they don't stay there now. The original chooks have also gone on strike and have not laid for several days.

One of the original chooks does a fair amount of bottom pecking and eats the feathers which we are keeping an eye on and have some bumper bits on standby. We tried the anti-pecking rings (the white ones) but although they stopped the feathers being pulled out they made them so cross that they were stabbing at the bottoms of the others and causing more damage so we seperated them and took the bits off. The bumper bits have a piece that comes around the front of the beak which hopefully would stop this.

Chelsea, Pearl is an absolute darling, she is so friendly already and not phased by me (or the dog!) at all, although it's early days you can tell she is going to be a real character, it would be a lovely thought if she was Sam reincarnated. Rose is quieter and I think it will take her longer to be more trusting. It always amazes me how very different in character chickens are.

I've just called them and they have all followed me into their run for bed, they are so well behaved I think I have been blessed I can't beleive how lucky I have been with the three of them getting on so quickly.
