Minnie&Moose
Put the incy on today to test the fertility of our little bantam cuckoo maran flock in preparation for when we get our first broody - and lo and behold, one of the bantam marans has decided to glue herself to the nest box and shriek like a banshee if we dare to ferret around under her in search of eggs. Makes me feel that spring is coming - even if the weather isn't very spring-like at that moment😥
The Dogmother
I have 2 broodies at the moment - The 'Twins' the two golden laced wyandottes; they have to be the vilest broodies ever! Fingers crossed for success, and Marvin not being a jaffa.
mullethunter
One of my Dutch bantam pullets went broody the week before last. I managed to put her off by shutting the nest box at night and moving her off the nest as often as I thought about it last weekend. She barely even grumbled at me. If only they were all so easy! Minnie&Moose
That's the kind of broody I like - chilled and amenable. Unfortunately we only seem to have the other variety at the moment, now that our cochin is too old to let brood. Perhaps it's time to invest in a few more gentle giants
The Dogmother
Haha, I see your plan K! My pekins are wonderful mums, just these wyandottes which are snarky.
mullethunter
One of my Wyandotte’s ate the first chick she hatched 😮
Minnie&Moose
Eeek! Fortunately none of my grumpy broodies are horrible to their chicks - they're just mean to us!
Minnie&Moose
Took the plunge and have set up our broody maran bantam on 6 eggs last night - so fingers crossed for Easter chicks and at least a couple of girls amongst them. These will be our first home bred birds which I find pathetically exciting!
The Dogmother
Oooo, can't wait to see them - it really is the best thing when you can cuddle freshly hatched chickies
Minnie&Moose
If all goes to plan they should be fluffy and cuddly and cute - just in time for Easter Sunday walkies?!
AndyRoo
We've never had a broody hen, and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

We have no Rooster, so if they managed to raise chicks, I'd start wondering why Chicken-God chose my hen for the second coming.
