parmaviolet
I just wondered how old your girls are /are living till? Also how old is your oldest layer? Juney is almost three and a half now, but has not laid an egg for over a year. She's my last original Omlet girl. Audrey (the other omlet girl) died at about two and a half & had stopped laying at two yrs old. How are your doing?
Nicola H
Ginger is 3 1/2 years old and still lays an egg every day............ Babs who was my other Omlet hen died earlier this year but she stopped laying about a year before she died...............Ginger is a fiesty hen she has been attacked by a Harris Hawk and now has a very pronounced limp, also she had lots of problems with her reproductive system in the first year so I am so suprised that she is still going strong. Sheilaz
Biscuit my eldest (adopted from another owner) Omlet hen must be 3 and a half but I don't think she's laid for a few months, it's hard to tell which is or isn't with a few browns though! Penny was just nearly 3 when she died & had been off lay for a few months. Someone is still laying whoppers from the s, I think they must be Petrova's & she's about 2 and a half & very well. The same age is still laying regularly but same age whitestar stopped a few months ago Chuckles my original Omlet is one of the top layers still, 5 or 6 eggs a week, and she'll be just about 3 yrs old now and looks very well. It'll be interesting to find out more about ages when the forum is older won't it, to see if many are laying or indeed living far beyond 3 yrs. Snowy
Bertha and Beryl are my oldest 2, adopted from another owner, I think they are about 2 and a half. Bertha the is as active and glossy looking as ever and still lays about 4 a week good quality big brown eggs. Beryl the is looking decidedly tatty and I think is moulting, but she lays much less frequently. Her eggs are very large though, but always have thin shells and are very 'wrinkly'. superjules
My two are around 15 months old and they were original Omlet hens. Their previous owners took delivery of them in December last year so assuming they were 20weeks old then, their birthdays must be around mid July. Daffodil lays an egg most days. Marigold is a bit less reliable, around 4 eggs a week, with the occasional soft, wrinkly one if I don't make sure she eats plenty of shells. That's how it's been since they've been with us anyway. parmaviolet
It's interesting that some of the original hens are still laying beyond 2 yrs. I think we've killed Junes egg laying with kindness She has been very spoilt by us and by the little girl who used to live next door and wanted to come by most afternoons to give them treats of sweetcorn and spagetti. She's very happy & glossy looking, but Os has used the word SUMO to describe her & she is very weighty. Actually, she was not at all happy when Os called her Sumo to her face one afternoon. She went and sat under the garden bench and put her head under her wing....no I'm not making that up, she really did. Just goes to show they really do understand us! sebowyer
The oldest hen I've kept lived until about 6, but hadn't laid eggs for a while. Mind you, they weren't as hybridised as they are now. Mostly they lived until three or four.
Lesley
One of our original Omlet hens, Millie, is 3 and a half as well - and we think she's still laying. Tallulah died a short time ago, she was poorly for a week.
Mrs Frugal
Both my original Omlet hens are still going - Jenny and Clarry arrived on 9th June 2004 and were a bit older than POL when I got them. Jenny's still laying just about every day but Clarry stopped after a year.
Jangle
We still have our two original Omlet hens, Sage and Onion, who arrived on 3 November 2004 so they must be about 3.5 years old now. Onion stopped laying about 4 months ago, but Sage is still going. She lays around 5 eggs a week at the moment, although we reckon she's about to stop as she always does when the days get shorter. Viva
I have a cross-breed bantam who is now 8 years old - and still laying every 2-3 days (but not in winter). Would love to know if anybody has, or has knowledge of, chickens that have lived to great ages.
bridgy chooks
Hey guys Have posted this before I think but my Mum's chook has outlived several chook mates and was 12 this Spring. I remember rescuing her from my cat's mouth when I was younger - the cat nicked her as a chick from the farm nextdoor... oops never told the farmer. I think she's laid around 20 eggs this year and is a real character, follows the dog around the garden and eats the dogs food We don't know what breed she is but she is tiny. There is a pic of her sat with the dog here... http://club.omlet.co.uk/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=13683 and another one of her here http://club.omlet.co.uk/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=11985
ubereglu
My oldest is Muddles, she's approximately 2 and a half years old! We've had her ever since she was POL and she's lovely!
