Urinary infection

Recommended Posts

I had persistent problem for years when I was younger, leading to kidney infections which are unbelievably painful. I found a solution to mine, though.

er ... phrasing this carefully as it's a family forum! a lot of women get cystitis after, um, a particular activity. The answer is to go to the loo immediately after that activity. Hard to do when you are feeling cosy and warm, and yes it does break up the atmospheric moment, but it has the effect of flushing out any bacteria that may have worked their way into the urethra. Make sure you drink plenty, avoid using soap or anything that could cause an allergy, but I think this is the best advice I ever got from a doctor - I hardly ever had it after I learned this.

Hope you soon feel better.

When i was at college i had many kidney inferctions and was in and out of hospital until i went for a cystoscopy, a camera put in a delicate place! They found that the entrance to the urethra was too small for the camera and had to make a slit  but this actually solved the problem and i haven't had a urinary infection for overt 10 years.

Made you wince didn't i

I hate those infections. Olly's advice did the trick for me when the kindly nurse passed it on, but sometimes it just happens. I consider myself lucky that I only get it once every two years (although it always becomes a kidney infection, no matter what I do to head it off and the doctor wouldn't give me antibiotics this time until I was bent double in pain and throwing up. He's a man). I have a friend who just has it constantly, I don't know how she stands it. Hope you feel better soon.

I had terrible trouble a few years ago with one infection after another - it never seemed to clear up :( .

In the end I used a homeopathic/herbal remedy called Potters Antitis - it contains Uri Urival (spelling?). I took the recommended dose until it cleared up and then one a day for years (until I got pregnant when I stopped all supplements) - it cleared it up and kept it away. 8):D

I also took cranberry juice tablets which give you the same benefits of the juice without ruining your teeth. I used to get my remedies from my local health food shop. Oh - and drink loads of water.

Hope this helps...

My daughter went through a phase of one infection after another.

The paediatrician advised us to not use soap or bubble bath, drink plenty, open bowels regularly as constipation can stop the bladder emptying completely (the main cause of my daughters UTI's  ) and drink a probiotic drink every day.

She has now not had an infection for quite some time (touch wood) and I really think that the probiotic drink is helping a lot as well as making sure that she has plenty of fluids and fibre to prevent the constipation.

She also used to and still does if not reminded-holds her wee untill she is completely busting which really doesn't help neither. :?

um......... that sounds so familiar :oops: - I still do it.....and I know I have a bladder/urethra problem and shouldn't  ......... and if I'm travelling, I reduce the amount I drink

I hate the way that the health professionals make you feel like a sex maniac with hygiene problems  - recurring problems very often aren't caused by the aforementioned activity.

You drink it - half a teaspoon to a glass of water, I think. Tastes a bit vile, but it makes your wee alkaline, which reduces the pain and helps to discourage the infection. You can buy a packet of stuff from Boots - Cymalon is one name - they taste a bit nicer, but do the same job.

Avoid fruit juice (apart from cranberry) or alcohol as they can make your urine acidic.

Glad you feeling better.
