Neither 1 or 2 - still trying to be sensible, But I have jioned the local (council run) gym, which doesn't tie you in for a year, and have been going 3 times a week. I just do cycling / walking etc, and am gradullay increasing the resistance. It just seems to make me more hungry though

Just been out to lunch with a friend. Bought two pieces of millionairre's shortbread home for myself and OH.

Just eaten both bits! :oops::lol::lol:

He'll never know!

you think thats bad. I made a tray of it recently for a fundraising coffee morning, and only half of it (big tray, remember) made it to the coffee morning!

I LOVE Millionaires Shortbread. Its a great cake, and would make a great name for a pop group too......' and here they come, the boys from Millionaires Shortbread'.....

Hello All - I've not logged onto the forum for a bit but i have kept up my new healthy eating regime and the good news ...

I've now lost a whopping 2 stone 5 pounds!

So pleeeeaaase stay motivated everyone. Without wishing to sound smug I've found it very easy. I'm not on a diet - have just changed my eating habits. I've still managed to eat bad things like birthdy cakes and two easter eggs! And so far I've lost this without any exercise routine other than taking the stairs at work. I plan to start doing some excercise in the evenings now that the days are longer but can't bear the thought of a gym so will be going for bike rides etc. OH has also lost 1 and a half stone so we're both feeling very happy. Of course a wedding later in the year does wonders for motivation.

The best bit is that I can't see that I'll ever change the way I eat from this because it's not an actual diet. :D

No I always thought I ate healthily! We did used to eat chocolate and biccies etc but we never had them in the house as a matter of course and we never ate processed foods either. I never fried food and am vegetarian. Our dinners used to be things like risotto (with whatever veggies I had in and not a jot of fat) pasta, bean chilli, cauliflower cheese (was a weekness). We weren't regular pudding eaters either just having a yoghurt or some fruit or ice-cream. Drank lots of water. But on a closer analysis I realised that we were doing the following bad things:

skipping breakfast

having a small convenient but not very nutritious lunch or having a baked potato and baked beans

skipping lunch if busy

having a lovely well prepared meal but

(a) too much starchy carb - white rice/white pasta/white bread/potato

(b) portion sizes too big

Also because of skipping breakfast/lunch was straving hungry when I got home from work and so would often have a quick sandwich before making dinner (too much bread)

Cake or a bun as a treat at the weekend

We've just changed how we eat so now we do the following good things: -

porridge for breakfast everyday made with semi-skimmed milk and no extras

skimmed milk in tea

wholemeal bread at weekend only - and very liitle if any in the week

big lunches e.g. mixed bean salads, tuna nicoise saled,

dinners with less starchy carbs or replacement e.g. wholemeal pasta not white (and not so often) brown basmati rice only - risotto regarded as an occasional treat (I LOVE risotto) bulgar wheat instead of couscous

no potatoes on a regular basis - just a couple of baby new potatoes (roast or baked are regarded as a treat - had some lovely roasties at Easter)

sensible portion sizes

Drink even more water

Booze as an occasional treat

It's really very easy. I haven't deprived myself of anything at all. I've had some loevley meals out eating 30% clotted cream ice cream; mussels in cream sauce; goats cheese etc. NIght drinking lots of wine. I have had the occasional cheese and biscuits treat. We eat a lot of pistachio and almonds as a snakck and also Nairn oat biscuits.

I couldn't live without my Nairn biccies. I take some plain rough oat biccies to work and LOVE them but they also do some sweet versions - ginger, mixed berry, mixed spice and they're lovely with a cuppa.

Easy Peasy :D

Well done Red. :P That is such an achievement! As you have changed your eating habits, rather than 'go on a diet', you are more likely to be successful and keep the weight off. I know a lot of us struggle with keeping our weight under control, so thank you for an inspiring story! :D

8) I'm delighted for you both, Red. Thanks for posting such an inspiring & balanced message.

Who could doubt just how important breakfast & lunch are, after reading that, which to me is an essential part of having healthy metabolism.

I love your enthusiasm, that food is to be enjoyed, which is what Buffie was promoting in choosing the healthy option.

It's funny, I very nearly dragged up this topic this morning, just to post a :( assuming that we'd all fallen by the wayside.

Well done you, it's terrific, and thank you for sharing it. Not long until the wedding?

Give it a go Annie if you're feeling uncomfortable with your weight. I never felt I needed to do anything as the weight crept on over the years but had reached a stage where I just wasn't comfortable with myself anymore. I realised that my weight was starting to dictate what I felt I could and couldn't do and I don't want to be like that (i.e. feeling conscious) so OH popping the big question was the final incentive. I've never been on a diet and never intend to. The habits I've adopted are essentially a low GI eating pattern. Collins do a good book called GI/GL diet explained (or something like that) which is really good. Basically half your plate should be veg; one quater should be protein (this can obviouly be beans etc not just meat or fish) and one quater should be carbs but not simple carbs. It's all to do with blood sugar levels and really makes sense. I feel I have a real understanding of how my body is treating the foods I put in my mouth now. We invested in scales with a bodyfat monitor and my fat has dropped from a scary 46% to 39%. I've also lost a lot of inches and have had to fish out my old wardrobe for clothes to wear to work. It sounds like a lot but I started in early/mid January and so the rate of weight loss averages to a couple of pounds a week. :D:D

Sheila - the wedding is planned for october so I'm not looking at dresses until the end of August  .

I had got very heavy although I carried it very well and so although I appeared big I don't think many of my friends realise just how very heavy I was. I need to lose another 4 stones to reach my optimum BMI (although I feel sure I'd look too thin if I got that low). The tricky thing for me, as I say above, is that with my weight as it was you must all be thinking - blimey she must have been HUUUGE to start with! But I wasn't and so that's why its been so easy to let it creep up on me. Yes I looked fat but not super-obese - although clearly statistically i was.

OH is going out tomorrow night and needed to buy a new DJ. He was very pleased when he tried on the suit and discovered he needed to get the next size down. He doesn't have as much to lose as me (he's blessed with long lean legs and a nice bum but his mid-drift had drifted too far!!)

So it's confidence all round in our household :D

Thanks for the support everyone - the only advice I'd give is to do what you feel is right for you.
