Guest
Someone has dumped a load of old tyres by a disused pub about 300 yards down the road from me. I just went and took 6 to grow veggies & make a potato stack - I might go and get some more later keep them out of landfill and save me the effort of making raised beds! theherd123
Great idea Pengy The spud tower will work wonders and you can just take one tyre off at a time when you come to harvest them!
Guest
I got 6, if they are still there next weekend I might get some more.
Charlottechicken
If any of those tyres are complete wheels they make lovely planters You just cut around one rim edge in a petal design, then push the tyre part inside out. The wheel inner becomes the 'foot' of the planter. You can paint them with leftover bits of paint, they are sturdy and don't rot!
Guest
There are a couple down there with wheels but I don't really need more planters. Just making raised beds for veggies so some quick small tyre ones are just the ticket. I'm the weirdo with the veggies in the front garden. Chooks in the back! Jules.
There's nothing wrong with veggies in the front garden- is that where you get most of the sun? My dad planted potatoes in his front garden because it faces west
Egluntyne
My front garden faces south so I'm going to try the stuff that needs plenty of sunshine in the front next year.
Lesley
We put our 5m x 5m fruit cage in the front garden to catch all the sun. We put trellis in front of it......
Guest
We get sun in all of our garden, sun rises in front of the house and sets behind but the garden is big enough not to be shaded by the house. Its purely to save me the aggro of keeping free ranging chooks away from the veggies
Tessa the Duchess
I love the old tyre idea for growing spuds, might look out for some We grow lots of veggies in our front garden sweet corn, marrows, potatoes in containers, considering we are in London I am surprised "Ooops, word censored!"ody nicks them but they have always remained intact Tessa

Guest
Theres still a load of them outside the pub, if anyone is visiting Hyde Hall gardens its just around the corner!
The Dogmother
Well spotted that girl! I'm always wombling logs or wood form the side of the road - just lob it in the back of the van!
Helly Welly
We dug up our drive and turned it into a fruit garden. We park on the road instead. Off-street parking may be desirable for some but i think a front GARDEN is far more inportant.
Guest
My old house had parking for 4 cars on the front and a tiny back garden, mind you I wouldn't have given up the parkign - in fact I gave up a strip of lawn out there. Luckily I have room for all of it now - but reading about fruit cages has me interested now...
fluffymuppet
I grow veggies in windowboxes on the front of my house. This year I had cherry tomatoes and marigolds. The old couple next door have a daily visit from the health visitor, and she arrived one morning when I was picking the tomatoes. I was still there when she came out again and she got a better look at what I was doing. She said "You're growing tomatoes! I thought you were just gardening!"
