The Dogmother
OK, I have decided (I think) that if I get enough Christmas money, then I will buy either a Remoska or a slow cooker. I've read up about both of them and know that they're not the same thing. Has anyone used both and can comment on the +and - points? The economy point of the Remoska appeals to me, as does being able to do a roast in it. But it's far more expensive to start with.
CatsCube
I dont have a Remoska, Im afraid but looking at them they do seem to be totally difernt from a slow cooker. and like it says itself it actaully cooks faster, and isnt a slow cooker at all. I think its going to depend on what you would use it for? Slow cookers have the appeal of being able to do something that other home appliances cant in that you can stick your dinner in it in the morning, go out for the day and come home to your food all done, and its far more tender than you could ever get in an oven, plus I wouldnt personaly want to leave an oven on and go out and leave it for the day. The Remoska seems like a bit of a gimmic to me, its basically a table top oven, I dont really see what it can do that you cant just do in your oven? If you want something thats small and easy to clean that you can cook your whole dinner in, I would recomend a foreman grill, at least then you get the health benefits of it draining away the excess fat, plus the grill plates 'seal' meat like chicken so it has a golden crisp outer but retains moisture. The Dogmother
Thanks for that Cat, perhaps I need to be more precise then. I like the economy points of the Remoska Need to be able to cook everything from a couple of chops to a roast, to soup. I eat my main meal in the middle of the day, so the 'ready in the evening thing' isn't an issue for me. If it's just going to turn out to be another gimmick, then I won't buy one as I don't have the money or room for something that isn't used. My cooker is an old gas one - it doesn't get very hot, so everything needs to be cooked on full whack and just the time adjusted or the food covered in foil. CatsCube
It which case it looks like a very good idea for you, if your only cooking for 1 or 2 it would be a lot more practicale than using an oven (especially if it doesnt work properly) Plus you can do a lot more in it. Although its worth noting that soups, roasts and chops could all be done in a slow cooker too. But if your eating at midday a slow cooker wouldnt be ready in time for lunch, and if you did start it the night before, right before bed you would have to try to sleep with cooking food smells in the house. (you might end up with late night munchies) So yeah I think for you it looks a good idea.
Egluntyne
I like my Remoska. I probably don't use it as much as I should. There is a useful website ~~here~~ about them.
The Dogmother
Thanks for that info guys; I've been trawling through the site and am currently reading up on Remoska recipes. I'll let you know what I decide.
WitchHazel
Claret, don't forget that Lakeland has its customer satisfaction guarantee, so if you buy the Remoska and sdon't like it, you can take it back. I decided some time ago to buy a Remoska. I read all the stuff on the website, watched the Lakeland videos, and went to my local Lakeland to buy one. There's only 2 of us, but I bought the Grand Remoska, as I couldn't see how I'd fit a whole chicken in the standard one. I used it once and realised it was hopelessly oversized. I then bought the small (standard) one, which has been very good. But by this time I had spend a couple of hundred pounds, as of course I had bought the rakcs for both of them too. In the end, I emailed Lakeland's customer services and asked if there was any way they would take the Grand one back. They said no problem, just return it to the shop. I felt really cheeky when I did, but knowing that Customer Services had already said it would be OK made me feel less embarrassed. The lady in Lakeland didn't bat an eyelid, and didn't make me feel guilty or anything. Anyway. Just a thought. The Dogmother
Thanks for that reassurance WitchHazel, I hadn't known about their guarantee. Interesting what you said about the size though; I had wondered whether the middle sized one wouldf fit a whole roasting bird in. The nearest Lakeland is in Stratford upon Avon and I go there fortnightly so will look next time and check out the sizing. At the moment, Phil has his eye on one on Ebay for me.. a Grand, unboxed but otherwise looks good. He said that he will get it for me on his Ebay Paypal account and I can pay him back when I get my Christmas money. My kitchen is only small and has hopelessly little storage, so I don't want to get one that is too big. I will let you know how I get on with the one on Ebay - I don't hold out much luck - Phil has had a look at past ones sold and says that they go for not far off full price and them there's the postage on top ...It's up to £50 now on the bidding. The Dogmother
Well, the ebay one went for too much. Phil had looked at the bidding history on them and said that they go for nearly as much as new ones (like Eglus then ). I bit the bullet on Sturday and bought one with my Christmas bonus.. it's th best thing ever - I roasted some chicken breasts with taters on Sunday and they turned out fantastically! Thanks all for your advice.
Egluntyne
I'm glad you like it! Try doing your jacket spuds in it. And scones. I use it a lot in the summer when I don't want the cooker on. I've got a cookbook somewhere that I will dig out for you. Don't hold your breath though....it might be after Christmas.

WitchHazel
- I got the accompanying cookbook free, but thanks very much for the offer. There is an additional recipe book to the one in the box http://www.lakeland.co.uk/product.aspx/!11331 I can't get the link to go directly to the item, so when you get there look for 11331 There's also this website http://www.hoorayforhomecooking.co.uk/home.html which doesn't sell Remoskas, but is dedciated to cooking with them. Tehy have lots of additional recipes and info. Edited December 19, 2007 by Guest
The Dogmother
Thnaks Hazel, I got the additional book free (should be £9.95) with the Remoska and have been browsing that site too. I used it again last night - baked some potatoes and added some fish fillets wrapped in Prosciuto ham.. I shall be having that for lunch today...Mmmmm
Louise
What size did you go for Clare Because of stupid hours I have some spare cash this mothe via overtime and I am tempted
The Dogmother
I got the grand - I figured that if i was going to get one, I may as well get the big size so that I could roast in it. It cooks far better than my rubbish oven too; I will use it on Christmas day to do the stuffing balls and roast taters - make more room in the oven for the enormous chook we are getting from Lesley! I love it to bits and it's so easy to clean too. I can't wait to be off over Christmas so that I can play with it more. It's handy that lakeland have an excellent returns policy too - if you're not 100% happy with anything they will refund or replace. Shame you're not nearer, or you could borrow mine to try out before you buy one.
Jules.
My mum is really raving about hers now that she has started to use it. The grand size isn't much more expensive than the medium sized one, is it.
Louise
I think the descision is made If I order today I wonder if it would be here for christmas I have an extra person and I am thinking my oven will be struggling
The Dogmother
I can't rmember the price difference Jules, but when I looked at it in Lakeland - the grand is that much bigger and I reasoned that it would be so much more useful. I like the fact that it is miserly with the electric too. I try to use my oven wisely and cook loads of stuff at once, but it's so rubbish, and you have to have the gas on full pelt to cook anything that it can't be economical. Who's the extra person Louise... is Simon bringing his pants over for Christmas?

Louise
He has offered to help but I am a bit precious in the kitchen and prefer to be left alone to do it or not at all Well I have ordered the grand remoska from lakeland on standard delivery so it may be here for christmas - or may not It doesn't feel right spending that much money on something I don't actually need
