Leptospirosis - Alert

Recommended Posts

I just received this by email:

Subject: Fw: Leptospirosis - VERY IMPORTANT - READ

Recently a woman went boating with her family and took along some some cans of coke and drank severalome. On Monday she was taken to the hospital and went straight into Intensive Care.

She died on Wednesday.

The autopsy concluded she died of Leptospirosis. This was traced to the can of coke she drank from. She did not use a cup or glass.

Tests confirmed the can was infected by dried rat urine hence the disease Leptospirosis.

Rat urine contains toxic and deathly substances. It is highly recommended

to thoroughly wash the upper part of any cans before drinking out of them.

The cans are typically stocked in warehouses and transported straight to the shops without being cleaned.

A study at NYCU showed the tops of cans are more contaminated than public toilets i.e.) full of germs and bacteria. So wash them with water before putting them to your mouth to avoid any kind of infection......

Yes, it can be very dangerous and starts off with flu like symptoms.

Leptospirosis is more commonly called Weil’s disease. It can be caught from stagnant or slow moving water also.

Thanks for the advice Clare, it is something I frequently forget to do. Everything will get a good wash now.

My ex used to be a champion white-water canoeist, and several of them had it (mildly) over the years. Especially when using the course at Nottingham as the water goes through a power station before the course, which heats up all the bacteria nicely.

If anyone was unfortunate enough to swallow the water, the routine was to make yourself sick straight away.

 Thanks for posting, Clare, I shall pass on that info. Hadn't thought about cans before, yuk! Very aware about rats though, as we are midst pest control right now. Yuk, yuk. Yes, they've been after the chicken feed (and chicken poo) but they were prob. living in the general compost heap, and several along the road, before they discovered the chickens. We know they also live in the sewers and drain all along our road, at the front. yuk, yuk, yuk.:twisted:

Son suggested today...to make sure I always look into the nestbox before reaching in with my hand...shudder...good point though. I'll swap that tip with him for the one about cans.

Yuk, yuk, yuk.

Coo - glad that I only drink tap water that has been through my water filter system or boiled water.

There is no end to all the scary stuff these days.

Well done Clare for bringing it to everyone's attention

A member of my fmaily used to work wuite high up at a certain cola company. He used to give me free crates of their drinks. Once when I drank one straight from the can in front of him - I remember him telling me this could happen - but I didn't take much notice :(

22 years on - I now know he was right :!:

Thanks for the warning.

Sheila, won't the council do anything about the local infestation?

Kooringa - I always drink filtered water too, and rarely drink pop. Although when we go out clubbing, I always drink from the bottle to avoid having my drink spiked  I wil be more careful too.

Local council...well, thought I'd just get on with it myself, rather than let on to the neighbours with KillaRat Vans outside our house! Wouldn't like them to think the vermin were because of our chickens...& you can be sure that would be the first subject. So, secret mission I'm afraid. Very expensive though  ...but possibly quicker than waiting for the council....

Re cans, OK you healthy water drinkers (me too, unless it's a cuppa). But, when my son was ill a few years back, the school had vending machines, and he had C*** with his lunch money and is now addicted.....it's 7 years later, I'm hoping he stops one day, & I'm glad schools are stopping the fizzy drinks.

There are worse addictions, but it's annoying.(Up to him, not me now) but I've told him about the cans!

But, of course, one always pours into a glass first anyway!

Hang on guys. UL alert.

It is all anonymous. It arrived by e-mail, and there's a vague and unattributable study cited at the end. Far be it from me to discourage you all from your hygienic habits but this just shouts UL.

Or maybe I've just been on the net too long.

BTW that last post was me - hit the wrong key before I signed on. Not so hot on the net after all. Please remove and I can remove the evidence from this post.

Having spent 10 long years working in pub cellers, I can confirm that they are frequently overrun with rats - I've squashed a few with beer kegs in my time! They probably do wee all over the bottles and cans, and I would never take the chance by drinking straight out of one, however, many pubs have highly suspect glass washing facilities as well, so you take a risk with glasses as well.

During my 10 years, however, I have never once heard of anybody being any sicker than a bad hangover, and given the mentality of todays society, I'm sure that people would be quick to sue if they became sick from drinking out a can or bottle! Oh! and one of the pubs I worked in was always full of medical students and doctors comparing notes on various illnesses and diseases, so they would have been the first to pick up on any nasties!

Just to go back a page re Sheila's reservations about having the council come out to do rat control - the chap from our council who came here drives a plain big white van and could be absolutely any utility - they don't have "Hey Everybody Look Who's Got Vermin" on them at all. They have been laying poison and come fortnightly to refill the boxes. They're well out of the way of the children, chooks and dog so I am as sanguine as anybody can be who has a rat infestation.

And (on another subject) does anyone remember the research on bowls of peanuts on bars? Don't eat them - they have a very high wee-wee content (technical term :D ) because slack gentlemen use the loo & forget to wash their hands & then go back to the bar for some more peanuts how gross is that?

Weills disease can be nasty a friend of mine died from it about 15 years ago. He caught it from the river at the bottom of his garden when he was working to clear weed they think he became infected through a cut and didn't get treatment quickly enough. He thought he had the flu and by the time his family got him to hospital his liver was damaged beyond repair

If in doubt - wash it
