Lady Penelope
Omlet is taking part in National Science Week this year, exploring whether the colour of eglus influences the size and number of eggs laid. This mass experiment will be taking place between the 10th and 19th March and we need willing volunteers to collect specific data about their eggs. If you are interested in helping out have a look at the link below. National Science Week
Lesley-Jean
Downloaded the form and we are ready to go. What an interesting experiment. Lets hope you don't have to rethink the entire colour range because of the results
ali-s
My girls will join in. It might just be the incentive they need to start laying again They won't want to let the red Eglu team down
Lesley
Will everyone have to keep their eglu clean to the same standards? Perhaps they prefer to lay in a clean eglu?
Lady Penelope
Will everyone have to keep their eglu clean to the same standards? Perhaps they prefer to lay in a clean eglu? No, don't worry too much, it is only a bit of fun and policing eglu cleanliness would be hard work! thank you to Lesley-Jean and Ali-s who have pledged their support so far! Cate in NZ
Imy's up for it here too We've made a general observation already that all our chickens prefer to sleep together in the green eglu (5 in a mark 1 ), but they all prefer to lay in the orange eglu, we only seem to get green eggs if the orange nesting box is already in use. We think that Phil's refusing to lay until she can do it in a pink eglu
Guest
Esther and Andrew will be very happy to take part in this and we expect to show that Blue Eglu Chickens are the best One problem, I can't find a link to the form. Where did you get it from?
Nicola H
Ginette the link is under Lady Penelopes' original posting, just put you curser on National science week and click.............. Emily and I have printed out the form and are all ready to join in.............

The_smeeeths
I am going to sound really stupid now but......how do you know who has laid which egg? I thought I had this sussed but change my mind. Any tips? My mum very helpfully suggested painting each chickens bottom a different colour and then when they lay the paint will transfer onto the egg and we will know....Not sure this is a good idea though!!!! Guest
The pepperpot eggs and gingernut eggs will be different colours, so that narrows it down to a choice of 2. I have 2 gingernuts and can usually tell who has laid which egg because they are a slightly different shape. Kim's tend to be lighter and more oval than Kath's which are usually 60g and rounder. Also you can sometimes watch to see who goes in the nest to lay.
The_smeeeths
I have 2 pepperpots and 2 gingernuts - with my last girls I could tell the difference as they laid a very light tan and then a brown type but this time I have 3 eggs a day all the same......very confusing
The Dogmother
Rosie will be up for this as she catalogues and weighs our chooks every day now. Surely, we shoudl try the same hens in different colour Eglus for this to be a true experiment? What's that James? Oh, you saw through my ruse to get another Eglu.... Louise
I never know who laid unless I actually catch them at it as they both lay big white eggs if I am not sure I will just enter my daily total and hope this is enough and it won't seriously skew the data and ruin the experiment If I get 2 eggs I will also assume 1 each

Mel (& Paul)
Yup we'll take part - our gilrs seem to lay in the eglu that they sleep in but occassionally we find a white egg in a green eglu. I think to be truly scientific I should get more eglus to really see if there is any difference
chocchick
Oh, you saw through my ruse to get another Eglu.... Time to ditch my PhD and do some real science for a change Worried T and S will let the side down though

motherhen
I've had a chat with the girls, and they are all up for it They all laid yesterday, as a bit of a practice (even if Sybil's was a sad soft one plopped through the slats ) and are all spending inordinate lengths of time dust bathing today, and drinking loads as they build up to the BIG LAY. The cupboard is full of tinned sweetcorn to urge them on as the week progresses
