Guest
just been out and given her a few grapes and some meal worms which she gobbled up. Just retrieved her hottie which she was sitting on, it was still a tiny bit warm but even when the water cools, I think it's still nice for her to sit on as it's cushioned and insulates her from the floor of the coop. Will pop out with it in a bit when it gets dark and tuck her up. We're going to try popping her in with the others t'row night, once they've gone to bed. What sort of argy bargy, if any, can we expect when we do this? Should we also make sure we get up mega early the next day to make sure they haven't woken up and are picking on her? Anyone got any experience of doing this?
missuscluck
Hi Justine, Just caught up with bea's progress report. Its the kids school hols this week so although Im off, I havent had a miniutes peace. The house has been FULL of kids all week. It sounds like you have had an eventfull week with bea. I havent a lot to add to all the good advice. Its so hard when they are thin not to feed them treats. I hand fed Massalla for nearly two weeks on a water dropper and pellets mashed up in hot water when she was poorly. She wouldnt of touched any treats at that point anyway as she was just not eating. However for all of thet she did pull through on very little food and water and is as strong as ever and ate when she was ready. They do need the proper food as the treats have very little nutritional value. I expect bea is all at sixes and sevens with her new surroundings. They learn very quickly though when it comes to treats. Mine spot me comming with my blue colander a mile off. It sounds like she is making a small start with eating and when she is integrated at night she will get some warmth from her bed mates! Its a great way of them getting to know each other at night when they are quiet. We do this with new hens. They tend not to bother each other at night and then we go and retrive the new hen in the morning to seperate them again. I think we have done this for say 3 nights in a row and then let them out together into the main run. They usualy leave each other alone even when they are awake its only when they are out together in the run they size up for a s"Ooops, word censored!"!. Can your hens see bea at the moment in the day? We put ours in a run within the run for a week before attempting to put them in to sleep together so they get to know them without being able to do any damage. Try not to worry too much about her. You are doing all you can. It sounds like she is just a small eater and if she is moving very little, I guess her body will tell her she dosent need to eat too much. Hope things continue to improve and good luck with the introductions.
Guest
hi lynda, yes they can see each other and they know she's there, they're very curious about her indeed when Ian gets home, I think we should maybe try popping her in with the others, he gets home about 10pmish, do you think that's too late at night to be doing that though? Carol U
I think it will be fine if you do it tonight - especially as it's so cold. When my new ones arrived I let them all go to sleep separately, then tucked the new ones in with the old ones. They were absolutely fine, and we lifted them out again next morning before opening the door into the run. You'll have to be careful during the day, as the old ones will almost certainly pick on Bea to start with. Mine were fine freeranging after 3 or 4 days, but it took longer for them all to get on in the run. Hope this helps. Good luck - you're doing a great job. Guest
it's difficult as Bea can't fend for herself very well as she can't walk. I think I've made a decision she's got a deep bed of shredded paper on top of a hottie on top of aubiose so she's insulated from below and DH is bringing some blankets home so that covers the top and sides. I don't want to disturb her any more than is necessary tonight but we'll give it a try tomorrow as he's home earlier then. xxx
Guest
here is my dear long suffering hubbie (I think the look on his face says it all ) with the packing blankets, they're a lot bigger and thicker than i imagined and he's got 3 of them and just wrapped her coop up in them (making sure there is still some air getting in). She should be toasty warm! You don't think she'll overheat do you? Just kidding!

Guest
Morning DH let her out at about 7.50am, He said she was on top of the hottie when he opened the door and he said it wasn't cold inside the coop. She came straight out for something to eat and drink and seemed very alert (I was watching from the window), he's popped a fresh hottie in for her and left the blankets over the coop (just folded back, away from the door) as it's quite frosty this morning. She went back in after having had something to eat and drink, I don't blame her! The sun looks like it might come out a bit later (fingers x'd). thanks for your good wishes and support, it is much appreciated! xxxxxx Edited February 16, 2008 by Guest

Eyren
Glad to hear Bea is a bit happier, Poet! I don't blame her for not wanting to come out in this cold weather - my littlest bantie has been lurking in the eglu a lot this week as well! Roxanne
Just made him a coffee and gave him some fudge Sounds like heaven to me - have you got a good fudge recipe Poet?? Glad to see Bea is doing a bit better - I'm learning a lot about integration from this thread - we are just having some new carpet laid - I think I will keep the old to put around my ex-batts house when they come but I don't think my husband will be as helpful as yours (but he loves fudge!)! Guest
Hope you're all having a good day Just a quick update. She seemed more alert this morning and she ate quite a few pellets and had a drink then went back in, I think because it’s so cold. She got a fresh HWB and snuggled in. I had to go out this afternoon but when I got back, I let our girls out while I poo picked their coop and when I’d finished, I sat on the bench (near the run) and chatted with our girls and Bea. She came out and had a few pellets and went back in. Shortly after that I gave them all some meal worms and Bea ate hers plus a few more pellets and some water. I think her appetite is improving, at least I hope so! :0) She has apple cider vinegar in her water (as do our girls) so maybe it’s doing her joints some good? I’ve left them now until dusk when I’ll pop in a fresh HWB for Bea and tuck her in and rearrange the blankets over her coop. Ian is working late tonight but he’s off work tomorrow so we will definitely try popping her in with our girls tomorrow night. The forecast for Sunday night/Monday morning is 0° so thankfully it will be slightly warmer anyway. Right, I’d best get a bit of work done! xxxx
