Bea, making progress I hope :0)

thanks peeps :D

i forgot to say, i tore the shredded paper into smaller pieces in case she got it caught round her legs.

I'm going to leave her to settle now and have a medicinal slurp of something alcoholic! Phew :?

As an extremely novice chicken keeper I have no practical advice for you Poet, just wanted to let you know that I have been reading about little Bea with great interest and sympathy for you and I really hope that you can relax a little now you have heard that she was a poor eater before you had her...

hugs to you

That's good news.

As for worrying- gosh I'm dreadful- I thought my chicken was ill earlier on today, turned out she was just about to lay her first egg (in a flowerpot! )

ahhhh, congratulations! :D:clap:

Sounds like you're doing all you possibly can, Poet.

I worried about Molly recently as her crop seemed empty at bedtime and she was a bit skinny. Then she started laying - tonight I put them to bed and had to have a feel of her crop to check it was normal (it was HUGE  ).

You're so attentive to all your girls I'm sure you would pick up if she really was unwell - I would leave it a few days before worrying unduly.

Have you tried a bit of Avipro in Beas water? I bought some just over a week ago after hearing what a good pick me up it appeared to be, and it is! It might just stimulate an appetite :?

I got mine from a recommended site called livefoods, and there is another thread entitled 'where to buy Avipro' where you will find the web addresses for livefoods and another online stockist, or just google 'Avipro'.

Good luck :D

Hi Poet

only just managed to log on (and check my emails)

very good advice from Adele - she knows Bea, how much she eats and her behaviour. It has been noticeably colder today which will have affected her. Good idea to start moving her in with the others. They like being in a group and although it will be hard at first with a bit of squabbling, in a few weeks they will all be alright together.

You've done all the right things - don't worry at all about having fed her a few grapes - it's alright for us lot sitting here saying oh you should do it this way - totally different matter when it's your own little chook and your very worried about her :D:D:D

Keep us updated - sorry I couldn't get back to you

vicki, claire, pam, thank you all. I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes, not for Bea but because I'm so touched by what a great support network this site is and you've all (everyone in this thread) helped me so much!

Better dry my eyes before DH gets in or I'll get a telling off!

I'll keep you posted, we're going to try and pop her in with the others on saturday night. I can't do it before then as Ian is at work and I want him to be here to help me, in case of any problems AND he needs to unscrew the roof of the coop so we can get her in. 3 of our girls sleep in the nest boxes and we'd have to turf them out to get her in otherwise

thanks again :D

Hi Poet, just seen your plight.

When Harriet wasn't well the other week she really enjoyed some warm weetabix and sultanas with a bit of sunflower oil mixed in. I made it quite stiff - rather than runny - so it was easy to eat. It was actually quite amusing in the end because she got it all over her beak and I had to wipe it off in the end. She also enjoyed rice and rice noodles. She had lost quite a bit of weight but seems to have put it all back on now.

Do hope Bea perks up soon.

Sorry you're worrying about Bea, Poet. I'm afraid I have nothing startling to add, just wanted to lend my moral support along with everyone else. I'm sure she'll come round. When I first got my little Toffee, I hardly saw her eating or drinking and worried dreadfully, but now she's a complete gannet!

I'm sure it's just the shock of change and Bea will settle into a proper routine soon. *hugs*

That is what I said.

If she isn't expending huge amounts of energy moving about, her appetite won't be massive anyway.

Sounds like she is playing you for a sucker.

However, if you remained concerned over the next few days.......I think you should take her to a vet.

Ooops! That'll teach me to scroll thoroughly before I post!

I said it on page one I think...you wouldn't want to trawl all that way back.

Anyway...great minds etc.

hi all, thank you for asking about her

Just to report, she was lying on top of the shredded paper and hot water bottle when the door was opened this morning, so hopefully she had a comfy night.

DH has added lots more torn up shredded paper in her favourite day time corner and popped a fresh hot water bottle under there for her as it is very cold again today. She's come out for a small amount of food and a drink and gone back in.

The first few days we had her, we were lucky to have a lot of sun and she did come out and sit in her sunny corner, as I called it. She even dust bathed the other day.

That's why I was concerned when she wouldn't come out yesterday. But, I think it's because of the cold, after all it affects humans with bad joints so obviously she must feel it in her poor little legs.

DH sprinkled a few meal worms on top of her pellets this morning and they've gone and her pot of grit has been knocked over, so we know she's been out while we weren't looking as well, so that's good.

I'm not going to keep going out today and just leave them all in peace and just freshen her hot water bottle before bed time.

I'll keep you posted :D

thanks Laura :D xxx

Could someone not knit her a jumper?

I would offer but she would probably be better with out

she's very feathery already but can you knit leg warmers? ;)

at around 3.15pm, the sun finally broke through the clouds and Bea came out, scratched around for a bit, had a few pellets, had a few sips of water, went over to her other feeder (there's a bowl on the floor and hopper on a breeze block) she had a nibble at that. Then went over to the netting and had a look at our girls, then went down the side of the coop to her sunny spot, decided she didn't fancy that so went back to scratching around then went back in.

A total of about 3 minutes or so but what progress! I am very buoyed by this and resisted the temptation to go out and tell her what a good girl she was ;)

Just before bed time, I'll give her a few meal worms and freshen her hottie.
