The Dogmother
She says that 'battery chickens' are necessary to feed the poor http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=514633&in_page_id=1770 Anyone else want to join the queue to strangle her? susanbb
What a silly woman. That is the polite version for the forum. Underneath I am doing this to her
Guest
I have posted about her on Cinnamon's thread in All Things Nice. To sum up I think she is either ignorant or doing it as a publicity/popularity drive - or both!!
Chicken Licken
Grrrrr - best she does not visit the area or I will set the girls on her!
Egluntyne
I am disgusted. Jumping on Nigella's "cheat" bandwagon.....and then patronisingly saying that if the "poor" can open a tin of supermarket stew and put some mashed spud on it they will think they can cook and will be liberated and might be tempted to try more adventurous stuff....and won't be scared of unusual and expensive ingredients. To me opening a tin of stew is no more like cooking than putting chicken nuggets under the grill.
Clur
I have posted about her on Cinnamon's thread in All Things Nice. To sum up I think she is either ignorant or doing it as a publicity/popularity drive - or both!! I've replied there too....if Delia's concerned about the price of food, best she get back to basics rather than encourage people to fork out for more expensive frozen food to act as a cheat. The woman has lost her marbles!

Guest
Sorry Ginette, I hadn't seen your post That's quite all right Claret! This is the right place to discuss this anyway. she has gone down in my estimation BIG TIME and mine! Even my eldest daughter (18 ) says she has lost all respect for her. I had forgotten about Nigella's 'cheats' thing. That makes me even more angry. In the interview in today's Telegraph, she talks about ploughing £5million into her Football Club, which she doesn't expect to see again. That and the new book and her comments about Hugh and Jamie's campaign all add up to make me very suspicious about her motives. I think she has successfully launched herself as a Celebrity Chef Leader for all those who are anti free-range/organic foods. This also means she's added strength to their voices and divided the Good Food campaign in one fell swoop. Everything the chefs (I'd include James Martin here too) are doing to re-introduce an enjoyment of food and love of cooking has been spoilt by this very, very stupid woman. I think she is ignorant beyond belief and I have no respect for her at all.
Martin B
I really hate Delia Smith, I can not stand her. I am just going to make a blog post about this as I am truly disgusted. Stupid bat!

She is soooooo prissy Miss Perfect I also don't like sweary Gordon but I'd much rather him or Bish Bosh Jamie than stupid Delia, at least they both come across as human Tessa
missuscluck
Oh my god. I dont belive I am hearing this. Thats delia off the xmas card list then (along with Tesco!!!) Silly woman. How condecending 'feed the poor'???? Does she think she is living in the 1800's. And as to the cheats recipies. ?????????? Its far more expensive to buy ready made stuff in cans then call it cooking. Makes you wonder whos sponsoring her behind the scenes?? Tesco probably
chelsea
Am also disgusted with this woman's attitude. this is not really what a person of her status should be publicising. Im not being funny bit there are a lot of "poor" people who do not work and are quite capable of working and scrounge benefits who are a lot more well off than me and my husband (they manage to afford to smoke and drink) they can afford to buy free range eggs at the very least! (note - this is not a dig at people who are on benefits who fully deserve them )
Guest
Mrs Bertie has posted this excellent ANGRY RANT in the All things Nice section (Delia definitely does not belong there!): I think it's terrible and irresponsible for Delia to make those comments. Presumably she agrees with GM tomatoes, cloned sheep and cows that are likely to be turning up in our supermarket meat counters, she also must agree with shooting male calves at birth born to milk cows to keep milk production cheap, to chickens who can't support their own weight for their 39 day lives, for bacon and meat so stuffed full of chemicals and water that if you try to fry it you end up boiling it in its own "juice" and to sausages that are just 35% meat - what the bloomin heck is the other 65%? But it's all cheap, it's got a "reputable" supermarket name on and it looks nice. Well that's alright then. I only own one of her books, it was given to me as a present and I'm off to chuck it in the bin. She has absolutely made my blood boil, I cannot believe that anyone as "popular" as her, who must be aware of the impact she has on food and product sales, can say that she's not interested in food politics and will carry on teaching the public to cook. I would no more want to cook an artifically coloured beetroot or a cloned lump of lamb or anything else. I'm gobsmacked and, as you can tell, absolutely incensed. The woman is back in the dark ages. I'm off before I give myself a headache. (mutters, dreadful woman, dreadful woman) Mrs Bertie AND JUST BECAUSE I CAN'T GET OVER WHAT SHE SAYS I HOPE SHE COMES BACK IN ANOTHER LIFE AS AN INTENSIVELY FARMED CHICKEN AND THEN SHE CAN AT LEAST FEEL THAT SHE'S DOING A POOR PERSON A FAVOUR - FOR 39 DAYS AT LEAST!!!!! Martin B
Post of the week!!! Yep, great post! Agree with Chelsea. Although, I don't believe in reincarnation it scores 10/10 on banter and rant points.

chelsea
Oooh, yes, lets do a "One Show"... Anyone else remember that when we bombarded the one show about when they showed a one sided piece on chicken farms back last year...or was it the year before?! CatsCube
In a way Im glad she has made the comments she has. As this will spark up a debate. She is clearly an idiot but also is saying what a lot of people are thinking. This way hopefully a lot of people will prove how wrong she is and it will actaully work to show more people that is is do-able and press the message home about switching to organic. Plus the backlash will hopefully villify her and she will fall hugly out of favour and sink without trace Im ashamed to live in the same city as her. Charlottechicken
I'm not sure she has been correctly quoted. She was on 'The One Show' the other night (could have been last night) and said they had altered her words. I think she was meaning that if a cheap food source was suddenly removed then a replacement should be offered or people should be shown how to manage with something different. I haven't read any of the articles though, and am only going by what I saw on telly whilst really not taking too much notice as I didn't realise about the hoo haa in the press She did look rather sheepish when asked about it though
Guest
I met someone today who said her sister tried a free-range (possibly organic?) chicken this week. It was a lot more expensive but she was thrilled to find that it fed the two of them 3 meals and sandwiches too. A 'standard' bird lasted only one meal. So it wasn't more expensive at all. and of course she found out that it tasted so much better too. A complete convert! That is the kind of conversion that Jamie and Hugh were trying to make. Delia may have killed off their efforts single-handedly - it just depends which way the Media turns. I agree that we should use our power to influence the Media! I'm not sure the One Show would welcome another chicken story though!
