Hilda and Evadne arrived yesterday - yay!

Recommended Posts

Both slim and pretty and apparently totally unfazed by their journey and change of environment. Will post pictures ASAP.

Haven't decided which is Hilda and which is Evadne, yet, but already their different characters are clear. One made it a priority to size up all the amenities in the walk-in run and eglu whereas towards the end of the day the other demonstrated her intense interest in exploring the garden outside the run by pacing to and fro along one wire mesh side whenever I appeared and jumping up and down. At dusk, the former went into the eglu and promptly fell asleep with her back completely blocking the doorway. After a while, I went into the run to help the other hen get into the eglu, and she made a bid to escape the run by half-flying, half-climbing up me towards what she thought was a gap in the roof (but is in fact a sheet of perspex).

Having read on this forum how early hens like to be out and about, I set the alarm for 6.15am - and awoke an hour later. Rushed outside to refill the glug and grub, expecting to hear the hens breaking up the eglu but they were still quiet. After a minute or two of the door being opened, they came out one by one and got stuck into breakfast.

The dog (a terrier) was incredibly excited by the arrival of the hens and barked and barked throughout the nice Omlet chauffeur's instruction. The hens seemed completely unperturbed; and an afternoon of training him not to bark at them (I think he likes to make them jump) seems to have worked. He hasn't yet barked at them at all this morning.

Am exhausted with "information overload". Will be arranging more "entertainment" for the hens today, with suspended broccoli and CDs, as I don't want them getting bored!

Glad to hear your new girls have arrived. Sounds like you are hooked already.

I think everyone on the forum will be smiling and nodding in agreement. My girls pace up and down the run when they see me at the kitchen window in the morning. If I sneek a peek without them spotting me they are busy in the run minding their own business.
