All very stressful, but at the end of the day he has admitted he was wrong and apologised, which is probably the most important thing. Well done for sticking to your guns and making him see you. We are all human and we all make mistakes it is just that in some jobs those mistakes are more critical than in others. I think that you are right not to take it any further because he has explained and apologised for what happened and this is what you wanted. Still he got to spend time with baby so he should be pleased!!!! I'm not feeling so sore today thanks. Still a little difficult to drink hot drinks, but that will pass ! baby bears mum Posted March 6, 2008 Share Posted March 6, 2008 I think you are being very brave and generous. If you are happy with what he had to say then that is all that matters. I would still make sure you keep a note of everything - it just gives you a back up if you need it (hopefully you won't but it's best to be prepared). OH is probably feeling pretty helpless about it too which is why he is on about compensation (I had a car accident last year and my OH - who is usually totally laid back - has got quite a bee in his bonnet about it all). Guest Posted March 6, 2008 Share Posted March 6, 2008 I just wanted to make a coment about the whole compensation issue, please don't take offence but it's been niggling me so I just need to get it off my chest. My dad nearly died from a tumour on his bowel about 15 years ago. He saw 3 different GPs who all mis-diagnosed him as having the flu! He was only (urgently) admitted to hospital when he started vomiting his own waste. After it was all over, I suggested litigation to my mum but she said she was just grateful that they saved his life in the end and she was just happy to have him back to full health. I think she was right. My parents, I think, had a darn good case to sue but they didn't because ultimately, it was the NHS that saved his life. We're lucky in this country to have a free health service. You should watch Michael Moore's 'Sicko', you'd be grateful for the NHS after seeing that. I do think today's society is too quick to jump on the litigation bandwagon and we're becoming just like the USA where people sue each other (or demand compensation) for the slightest thing which makes people afraid to go to the aid of other people for fear of being sued. If you think his error should be recorded/investigated then make an official complaint, but I don't think litigation/compensation would be the way to go. The NHS is strapped for cash as it is. All these adverts for injury lawyers etc don't help either. That's just my opinion though, it's your decision. However sometimes using the threat of legal action or complaint can make people sit up and take notice especially if they are at fault and you need a quick resolution. It is never ideal and even if you are on the 'right side' it is complicated and stressful (I know from first hand). It is not always about compensation - Professionals occassionally need reminding that we are people and not just case numbers. If you can get things resolved without it then brilliant (it is always the best option) but we need a safety net so that huge mistakes are not made and unfortunately the legal path is sometimes the only thing that works. I don't agree with you however that the NHS is free. We pay a huge price for the service they provide through our taxes. I'm not saying that they receive a big enough proportion of the taxes we pay, but that is more a gov issue. However I do feel that both myself and my husband have more than paid for the treatment I received on Tuesday, if not many times over. I also currently am paying a huge price to have my back sorted as the NHS will not treat it. Is it fair that we all pay into a service then don't get the treatment we need. Personally I would prefer not to pay into the NHS and pay as we go for any treatment that we require. This would be a much fairer system. We pay a huge price for the service they provide through our taxes... anybody can walk into a hospital in this country and receive treatment, whether they're unemployed or on limited income. In America, hospitals won't treat you unless you can prove you can pay or have health insurance. This means many people go without treatment they need and even die because of it. Re your comment about preferring not to pay into the NHS and go private. Not everyone has that luxury so those that can't afford it would have to do without, like in America. I pay, I think it's quarterly, for a pre-prescription. Costs about £30-ish a quarter? Can't remember the exact cost but the drugs I receive (to keep my heart beating properly) cost much more than that £30 so I'm very grateful for the NHS and I don't think what we pay in National Insurance contributions is unreasonable. I presume your idea of pay as you go would be based on everybody having private health insurance, which is fine if you can afford it, or it is part of your salary, but for those who can't afford it, being ill would become a nightmare. This is how it works in the US, and many people get themselves hugely into debt to pay for medical care One of the problems faced by the NHS is that new drugs, treatments etc., are appearing on an almost daily basis, and everybody wants the latest op. or drug for their condition. There just isn't enough money for this and so inevitably some will suffer. The recent case featuring the lady who fought to get the latest breast cancer drug Herceptin? is an illustration of the problems. Anyway, I'm glad you feel satisfied with the apology and I do hope you get better treatment at your next op. and all heals well. Tessa. I am already paying in my taxes, now can't get treatment for a problem and am having to pay privately which we can not afford! We struggle to pay our bills as it is, but I am unable to pick my son up without receiving the treatment we are currently having to pay for privately! Therefore in my case we would be better paying for what we need! The current treatment I am having to pay for is £40 per week for half an hour! Osteopath sems to be doing a great job. I feel better now than I have done in years. Which is worth the financial worry. Still Stings when I have to pay though! The physio was obviously wrong if the osteopath is able to give you some relief. Not wanting to turn the thread into a rant but as tax paying/ni paying citizens it really niggles me that people can just waltz into this country without contributing a penny and get treatment. My husband and I have both worked non stop since 16, he pays incredibly high contributions and we get nothing from the state (we've been fortunate never to have been in hospital either) so I can see where you are coming from Michelle.
