Teaching little ones to 'blow' into a tissue.....

Recommended Posts

Sorry I'm probably not much help but if there is a way to teach them I never mastered it! I've got 4 children - 2 seemed to do it just naturally and 2 struggled - my youngest, who will be 9 next week, still can't do it properly bless him :(

Hope he's feeling better soon.

:D:D Oh, you make me smile after a poohey day at work!!!

I so remember my son (now 12) just not getting it, and spending hrs trying to get it to happen!!

It's the "no box, no instructions" bit of child rearing that gives you cause to grin, when you realise that every mother has gone through this , and it's not you, or your children, and yes, boys so do prefer to use a sleeve.........

Thank you, you brighten an otherwise c.....y day! :D

its hard to train them when they are really bunged up, when the cold is better teach him to blow through his nose by copying you. make it into a game, blowing out of nose and then mouth, thats how i have got my two to do it. its always a bit scary for them when there is alot in there (yuck!!) as it gets bubbly. when they were smaller i used to use one of those blub things to get it out, it worked really well.

my two have colds all the time, it just goes round and round the nursery. they are great at blowing their noses now, my little two year old has started getting her own baby wipe and doing it herself (although it does sometimes end up on the floor)

gosh!!!! us mums are always talking about lovely things!!!!!!!

i have not spoken to you for ages, how is everything going?

I suppose telling him to shut his mouth & blow may work?????

:lol: Emma, you so don't have children!!

Sorry, I don't mean to be rude :D You would have thought it was obvious to do that, but unfortunately the obvious things don't always work with children. Somehow, they are incapable of blowing down their noses and all you'll get is a snotty raspberry. Although it might have the desired effect. 8)

If Seth's nose is very bunged up you could try keeping him somewhere humid/steamy like the bathroom after someone's had a bath/shower which may help things get moving.

It's very hard getting little ones to blow their noses but I used to get mine to copy me and when they tried I used to hold one nostril closed which seemed to help them doing one at a time. But whilst wanting them to blow their noses you also need to make sure that they don't blow too hard or they can force stuff back into the sinuses & cause infection

I've been an au pair for nearly 5 years in the past & looked after lots of children & somehow they all managed to do it ok, some even as young as 11 months managed to do it with great sucess - a proper blow!

You are right...I soooo don't have children & have looked after too many other peoples - what would I know eh? & I sooooo DO NOT want any!!!!

My 6 year old got the hang of it at a really early age but my 4 year old just can't do it at all! He actually believes he can't do it now so won't try

With ds2 all I can do is keep wiping it and using vicks on his chest and Olbas Oil on a hanky nearby at night. I also use decongestant cold syrup at night when he's bunged up.

Hope Seth is feeling better soon

Since my first response I had a good think about it and if I remember rightly, I held a hankie over their noses and blocked one nostril then told them to breathe in and breathe out harder - especially when I asked them to try and make a hole in the hankie. They got the hang of it really quickly - about 2/3 years and no problems apart from when they tried it for themselves they blew too hard. It's a case of making it fun. Another cute moment was when my daughter coughed in her sleep and covered her hand over her mouth while still blotto - that would have been at about 3 years too.

Good luck, Koojie

Oh no, I'm sorry Emma  That was rude of me. You have probably had more experience of children than I have as an au pair!:lol: You could probably give me lessons! 8)

This probably sounds like child abuse :shock::shock: but there is always a candle lit somewhere in this house at night - we used to get the boys to try and make the candle flicker by blowing through their noses - the oldest was that good he could blow the candle out :!::!::!: admittedly they were about 3 or 4 years and we were always present but by the time they had to blow their own noses they were experts!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please don't report me to childline!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know I've never really thought about it. I just kind of assumed they couldn't up to an age and used to squeeze their noses when I wiped them to get out as much as possile (lovely). Then they just kind of knew. I've never thought about teaching them.

Sounds like a good idea.....although I can imagine that it would be a trifle grisly at times!:vom:

The 'gunk' can be easily (fortunatly) washed out . There is a small plastic nossle bit and a plastic bulbus squeezy bit. I started useing one for my two after a friend from America said how good it was. I will try and post a link for one.

I know it all sounds a bit weird - BUT it works !
