AliA
Happy Easter, Please could I ask how much one would expect to pay for a pekin bantam?. I saw the most gorgeous buff coloured pekin today - I think it was love at first sight for both of us!. Then I saw the price tag on the hen house of £45.00 (just for the pekin!!) I am new to keeping chickens and am not sure what the average costs are for this breed. Thoughts appreciated Thanks
Janty
I have bought several pekins which were aged between 12 and 18 weeks and the most i have ever paid is £15.
Eyren
That is a heck of lot for a single pekin - you can get a breeding trio for that price! Unless it is of show quality and good parentage, and you want it for that reason, that's a rip-off price IMHO. I paid £25 each for my pekins earlier this month (one black, one lemon cuckoo), which is the most you should pay for a pure-bred pet quality pullet (I paid the same price for my wyandotte bantams a couple of years ago). They are lovely little birds as well: http://club.omlet.co.uk/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=25158 http://club.omlet.co.uk/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=25160
Tara.F
£12 to £22 round here
superjules
Mine was £25 from the same place as Eyren, but they are vaccinated, which I don't think I'd necessarily get from a small breeder. I wouldn't buy an un-vaccinated chicken as I've had a chook die from suspected Marek's so I can't take the risk.
Shirl
I paid only £10 for mine and they swapped one when she turned out to be he. They were about 12 weeks when I got them.
Mrs Webmuppet
I paid £25 for the Lavender Pekin and £28 for the Columbian Pekin ( a bit pricy but she is very cute......OH had fallen in love with her)
Egluntyne
At **Storrs Poultry** near Sheffield they are £15 each at POL.
Boris70
When I got mine from Norfolk I was quoted £32 each, but after phoning another breeder I got them for £8 each - however, being a novice to chicken keeping didn't realise what bad condition their feet were in - so word of advice from someone who has now learnt - check their toes as you can;t see them easily because of their feathers! Gentle1973
I paid £25 each for mine yesterday, I got a Millefleur Sable Poot and a Blackrock Sable Poot. I must admit I was quite surprised how much they were, but everywhere I phoned said they wouldn't have any until May. If anyone knows where we can get a couple of Frizzle Pekins, please could they let me know! I am in Dorset and would be willing to drive about an hour or so in any way to get them! Eyren
Something to bear in mind is that it depends on age - many breeders will charge x pounds per bird, plus y pounds a week over the age of z weeks, to cover their cost in feeding them. So a POL pullet will cost more than a 12- or 16-week-old, for example. Less than a tenner and you're probably being sold a wrong 'un, as Boris found out - but anything over thirty quid is probably too much as well!
